BRIMSTOWAD to get a Rs 16-crore update
After awakening to the realisation that implementing the BRIMSTOWAD report was the only permanent solution to the city’s waterlogging problems, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now concluded that the Brihanmumbai Storm Water Drain project needs to be updated.
‘‘The old report focussed more on the city and the suburbs were not considered,’’ said Additional Municipal Commissioner S K Singh. ‘‘In the last 10 years, there has also been a change in the topography and rainfall patterns. We need to change the design parameters accordingly.’’ So, the BMC will now update the project—it’s likely to be cleared in the Standing Committee on Wednesday—by spending Rs 16 crore. The consultants, however, will stay the same.
The BRIMSTOWAD report was prepared by Watson and Hawskley International with their Indian partner Associated Industrial Consultants Ltd and the revised study will be conducted by the newly-formed Montgomery Watson Harza Pvt Ltd.
While the BMC will pay the consultants Rs 16 crore, it will also pay IIT-Powai Rs 28 lakh to work as third-party consultants. The updated project report will be submitted in 21 months, in two phases.
