A few hours before the elections were announced and the model code of conduct came into force, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) gave its nod to give a salary hike of 75 per cent hike to its one lakh employees. The longpending discussion amongst employees� unions and the civic administration reached its conclusion on Monday with the civic body approving the hike, which will set back the civic coffer with over Rs 759 crore annually. The hike would be given on the basic salary of all the employees and the rate revision would be due from March 1, 2005. Around Rs 57.5 crore will be spent monthly to pay the backdated income while Rs 2700 crore will be henceforth spent annually just on the employees� salary. BMC痴 budget for 2009-10 is around Rs 19,000 crore and it spends more than 47 per cent on the salary of its employees.
