BMC will have manual on handling trees
The BMC will soon have a tree manual which will give comprehensive information about trees in the city and lay down guidelines about how they should be maintained. This is part of the strategy suggested by tree experts to avert falling incidents after they were given a list of 200-250 unhealthy trees.
The decision was taken in the second meeting of the seven tree experts, appointed to suggest measures to curb tree falling post the Nariman Point incident on July 17, with Assistant Municipal Commissioner Aseem Gupta on Tuesday. “It will be like a complete handbook on handling trees for the BMC,” said Avinash Kubal, an expert present at the meeting.
“The experts have divided the city wards. Each will inspect the dangerous trees in these wards from Thursday and suggest measures to the BMC,” said Kubal.
This is expected to wrap up by August-end, after which the experts will begin work on the manual. “The biggest problem with trees in the city is that they have a life of 30-35 years, so we will plant trees that live longer. Also, we will suggest how much area around the tree should be kept free from cement paving so that its roots don’t become weak,” said Kubal.
The manual is expected to be ready in two to three months.
