BMC launches Rs 16-crore patchwork for smooth roads
Minor road repair contracts now handled by ward offices
Mumbai: Having come in for stern words from the courts for the poor state of the city’s roads, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a Rs 16-crore patchwork job to make the ride smoother for motorists.
‘‘The contracts for repairs on minor roads are now being handled by ward offices,’’ said a senior civic official. ‘‘This ensures that they can act fast as soon as localised problems are detected.’’
Too little, is what the political representatives are saying, just two days before Mayor Datta Dalvi and Shiv Sena Executive President Uddhav Thackeray meet BMC and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority officials to tackle the problem and Raj Thackeray’s planned rally at Azad Maidan targeting civic apathy to citizens’ hardships during the monsoon.
Also, some corporators are alleging that roads not taken up for improvement before the monsoon are now almost impossible to negotiate. ‘‘Lagoon Road connecting Malad to Marve has been in terrible shape for six months,’’ said Congress Corporator Aslam Sheikh. ‘‘Now it’s been destroyed, there’s just no road.’’
Leader of the civic House Sunil Prabhu also carried out an inspection of pothole-filling work being undertaken in the western suburbs.
