BMC痴 anti-malaria campaign to begin from June 1
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in association with Observer Research Foundation (ORF) plan to launch the 閃umbai Against Malaria campaign from June 1. A consultation meeting was held on Saturday to discuss the campaign, which aims to reduce deaths because of malaria and other water-borne diseases during the monsoon season. The five-point campaign discussed in the meeting to make the city malaria-free will focus on elimination of stagnant water bodies that breed mosquitoes; early diagnosis and referral of patients, correct and complete treatment, popularisation of the use of bed-nets coated with anti-mosquito insecticide and adoption of indoor fogging.
Representatives of the Association of Medical Consultants (AMC), Sion, Nair Cooper and Kasturba hospitals, Municipal Mazdoor Union, and NGOs such as Pukar, SNEHA, Art of Living, Alert India and Barvalia Foundation were invited to be part of the programme.
Additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar pointed out that although the BMC has achieved significant success in containing the spread of malaria from construction sites, the big challenge is to control it in slums.
Dr Sanjay Oak, dean of Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital and director of BMC痴 major hospitals, said. 溺alaria is a killer but a stoppable killer. Every single death can be prevented if there is early diagnosis, quick referral, and treatment that is correct and complete. He stressed the importance of change in the behaviour of citizens.
