BMC to compensate victims of tree collapse
Mumbai, Sep 27 (PTI) Following many incidents of tree collapse in the recent past, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to compensate the victims. BMC will pay Rs 1 lakh to the kin of those who died after a tree collapsed on them and Rs 50,000 to those suffering from complete or partial disability. While those suffering with minor injuries are liable to get free medical treatment from any civic-run hospital. “A policy has been drafted to compensate any victim who dies or gets injured due to tree collapse. The victims are entitled to compensation only if the tree collapsed is on public road or on BMC premises,” Deputy Municipal Commissioner Chandrashekar Rokade said. The garden and recreation department has formulated a policy in this regard and a committee has been formed to look into the incidents of tree mishap. The compensations will be given within 30 days, Rokade said, adding, “The committee will prepare a report including details of the victim and accordingly compensation will be given.” Trees will be trimmed every month, and inspections will be carried out on a regular basis, he said. Meanwhile, corporators today demanded compensation for Satish Patil (33) and Siddhesh Kanade (19) who drowned at immersion sites on the last day of the Ganesh festival.
