BMC introduces software to help monitor civic wards
In a move that could improve administration of civic wards, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has prepared a software, which will provide corporators data pertaining to their wards at the click of a button. The software was introduced following demands from corporators. With the civic elections approaching, the elected representatives have started to closely monitor works in their ward, and the software would help access details quickly and accurately. It is likely to be put in use before the civic elections.
Information like ward budget, important roads, flood-prone areas, voter population and other such important date will be provided. “The software is ready and has been sent to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) for approval. We will then demonstrate it to corporators and install it on their laptops,” said a civic official from the Information Technology department.
Civic officials, however, are a little worried about the success of the software.
In 2009, for Diwali, to reduce paper work, as agendas and details of various meetings could be sent to them via email. However, even though official email addresses were created for all corporators, the civic body received a poor response from them.
However, Sunil Prabhu, leader of the house, who demanded the software, said that it would make corporators’ work easier. “For every small detail, we have to call up civic officials,” said Prabhu.
Meanwhile, the civic election department will also be mapping the locations of polling booths set up during elections, and will upload the information on the civic election website and corporators’ laptops, so that people can be informed of polling stations closest to them.
