Structural audits for bldgs may be compulsory …………….Yogesh Naik I TNN
Mumbai: On Wednesday, the state cabinet will take a decision on making structural audits compulsory for buildings that are more than 30 years old.
The state had earlier made an announcement about this, but will change the laws in the current session of the legislature. Sources said the BMC Act, Nagpur Municipal Corporation and the Mumbai Provincial Corporation Act 1949 will be amended for this.
Former additional chief secretary, urban development, Ramanand Tiwari said though the state had made an announcement before, the delay took place as the Acts had to be amended.
The provision can be misused by people. In some cases, it can be used as an eyewash. I have also seen firms carrying audits at a cheaper rate, said structural engineer Saish Dhupelia. One of the main reasons for making structural audits compulsory is to keep a check on housing society members who keep fighting and delay building repairs.

Sources said due to this amendment, structural audit will become a lucrative assignment.
