Builders will have to maintain lifts in Mhada,SRA bldgs for first 10 years ……..Somit Sen
Mumbai: The state government will adopt a policy to make it mandatory for private builders involved in SRA and Mhada projects to undertake maintenance of lifts for ten years.
This was announced by state housing minister Sachin Ahir while replying to a question on poor condition of lifts in some SRA and Mhada projects.A legislator pointed out to the minister that in a recent case,a six-year-old girl was killed when she got stuck between the door and gate of the lift at her Dharavi building. The seven-storeyed building was part of a SRA project. The girl was on her way to the Sunday mass when the incident occurred.
Ahir said he was concerned about the safety of citizens staying in SRA and Mhada houses. We will make amendments in our rules to ensure that builders are responsible for maintaining lifts for the first ten years after construction, he informed the House.
Legislator Kiran Pavaskar also brought to Ahirs notice the dilapidated condition of several Mhada buildings. At least 35 buildings are in extremely bad condition and some of them can even collapse during the monsoon, he stated.Ahir said the government had already begun conducting a survey of all buildings.I have directed officers to conduct structural audit of all dilapidated buildings and send the report to the Mhada board. We will publish an official list of all dilapidated buildings, specially those which are on the verge of collapse, and take urgent steps to shift residents to transit flats before repairing/reconstructing the buildings, he stated.
Pavaskar said the government should expedite the work on old buildings which are in desperate need of repairs as the monsoon was just a couple of months away.
