BMC demolishes 600 illegal stalls in two days
MUMBAI: Cracking the whip on unauthorised stalls, the local civic body has come down heavily on 600 illegal hawkers in the city and collected nearly Rs 12 lakh in fine, an official said on Saturday.
In its campaign against unauthorised hawkers, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on September 20 and 21 demolished illegal stalls in Andheri, Khar and Bandra during a surprise check.
“We have demolished 600 illegal stalls in two days and expect to collect fine of Rs 12 lakh,” BMC’s Deputy Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale said.
The civic body on September 21 demolished 510 illegal stalls, largely of eatables.
“On day one we used five-six vehicles for removing the unauthorised stalls and then we decided to go on mass drive where 29 vehicles were used,” Bhosale said.
The BMC would continue to take action against illegal hawkers as they create problem for residents, he said.
