BMC to evict 1,000 hawkers
All south Mumbai roads will be free of hawkers as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will evict them before US President Barack Obamas visit on November 6 and 7. More than 1,000 illegal hawkers, who have encroached many roads, will be evicted. The areas of Crawford Market and Colaba Causeway that are usually filled with hawkers will have a new look in the first week of November. Already in the last three days, the civic body has evicted 300 illegal hawkers from footpaths in the island city.
Although there is no official confirmation about the US Presidents visit to the city and the places where he would visit, we are still trying to keep the place free of encroachments and hawkers during his visit, said Rajendra Bhosale, deputy municipal commissioner (special).
The BMCs encroachment and removal department will clear all illegal hawkers from Nariman Point, Churchgate and CST area, and also Worli, Prabhadevi and Mahalaxmi area, which would Obamas route from the airport to Hotel Taj, where he will stay.
The BMC is also going to spend Rs 10 lakh to bring 200 palms trees from Hyderabad to plant them at Worli sea face.
