The
most common activated carbon used for remediation is derived from bituminous coal. Activated carbon absorbs
volatile organic compound from ground water by chemically binding them to
carbon atoms.
Activated carbon
is commonly adopted for the removal and recovery of aromatic compounds in water
and sewage due to its high surface area, tunable porosity and general chemical
affinity with such compounds.
