Reading is a complex skill that the majority of us have learnt quite easily. It involves decoding and comprehension. However, nearly 20% children face severe difficulties in learning written language. Reading is based on a complex set of skills and cognitive processes, some of which have been identified, such as phonological processing, but the underlying reasons for these deficits are not yet well understood. The present talk will delve upon language structure and the emergence of dyslexic symptoms in school going children. The thesis of the talk is that, apart from biological and cognitive factors, language is the key indicator in the development of dyslexia.
The second part the talk focuses on various Neuro-imaging and Electrophysiological techniques which can be and are employed by researchers to diagnose dyslexic symptoms among the population. Among the prominent techniques the talk would concentrate on ERP (Event related potential) in detail.
