20 green films set to roll

Nagpur: Following a Supreme Court direction, the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) has made 20 audio/video films on environmental awareness.

Addressing the media, vice chancellor Rajan Wellukar said the films contain lectures from experts, such as Sunderlal Bahuguna, an authority on dams, and Madhav Chitale.

The apex court, in 2003, directed 350 universities and 17,000 colleges to introduce awareness course on environment and make it a compulsory subject in the curriculum. The court also warned that stringent legal action would be taken against those who fail to abide by its norms.

“With support from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), UCSR Communications (USA) and the European Commission, Brussles, we have produced 20 audio/video films to generate environmental awareness among students,’’ Wellukar said.
