Government devises e-scholarship solution
Students eligible for scholarships under the social justice department will now directly receive the money due to them in their bank accounts.
The social justice department on Wednesday announced the launch of an e-scholarship solution for students in conjunction with an IT solutions company, Mastek Limited.
The new plan will apply to those availing scholarships at the post-matriculation level and belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Classes, Nomadic Tribes or Special Backward Classes.
Previously the process was very involved as students had to fill in forms, submit them to the colleges, and then the government would send the money through the colleges, said Shivajirao Moghe, minister of social justice. Now students will be able to get the money directly, as soon as they open a zero-balance account with any nationalised bank. It will be a smoother and quicker process of delivering the scholarships.
There are around 24,000 students in the city eligible under the social justice departments scholarship scheme.
