Door-to-door garbage collection kicks off

Last week, metro reported how civic officials were planning to make
Lokhandwala-Versova garbage free by removing the area’s community bins
and getting people to segregate their waste.

This week, the drive kicks off at N Dutta Marg. From June 16, the BMC
van started visiting all 35 societies in the area, collecting the
segregated wet and dry garbage.

Also, the garbage dump opposite Rosewood society has also been removed.

Says ALM member and Seashell apartments resident Alexandrina Aiyar,
“We have been segregating garbage in our homes for over a year.

For the dry garbage, we had hired workers from the NGO Force who would
come and collect it and then recycle it. The wet garbage was collected
by our sweepers and servants and disposed in the Rosewood dump.”

Now the BMC van collects the segregated wet garbage everyday after 3
pm from each building, while Force workers continue to collect the dry
garbage.

Juhu-Abhishek building resident Minoti Chatterjee says, “The ALM has
always been working towards keeping the area clean and healthy. This
is the most eco-friendly and hygienic way of disposing garbage.”

An official from the solid waste management department says, “We have
started with one small truck that collects garbage every afternoon.

Gradually we will get another truck, so that it becomes easier for us
in the future.”
