Audit for water loss to leakages……Sandeep Ashar
Mumbai: The amount of water Mumbai loses to leakages in the distribution network will finally be quantified. In order to bring down the water loss due to leakages, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to contract out work to agencies, which among other things will audit the water distribution system in wards.
The BMC has roped in expert agencies to help them curb the wastage. To be initiated on a pilot basis, the agencies will detect leakages in five zones in the western suburbs, between Malad and Dahisar, and three zones between Parel and Dadar.
Senior officials said the mandate for the appointed agencies will be to upgrade existing drawings for the distribution network in these zones, to select areas in the zones where water flow can be measured, to audit supply on basis of the data, and to pin-point leakage spots and plan their phase wise elimination. The leakages, thus identified, will then be repaired by the BMC. The agencies will then conduct another audit to determine if the leakages have reduced.
