The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) book on disaster management and flood preparedness guidelines will soon be emulated by other towns and cities in the state. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, at a disaster management workshop about Making Maharashtra a resilient state on Saturday, directed all other municipal corporations and councils across the state to come up with a similar book. The book has been compiled by the disaster management department of the BMC.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and representatives of all the district were also present at the meeting. After reviewing the second edition of the book, the CM said it should be considered a role model in disaster control and should be compiled by every corporation and council.
The BMC’s flood preparedness guideline, is a 262 page book covering thematic data related to city’s vulnerabilities. The topography, rainfall pattern, high tides and lowt tides, rivers and storm water drainage system have been covered The book is an analysis the vulnerabilities of each and every ward in the city. At the same time it also talks of the efficient solution to tackle them, said Manisha Mhaiskar, Additional Municipal Commissioner.
The first edition of the book was launched last year. The emergency support function (ESF) has been incorporated in the disaster management unit. Fourteen ESF’s have been formulated comprising a lead agency and several support agencies, added a senior civic official from the disaster cell. At the same time, the CM stated that the copy of the BMC’s disaster control book should be made available at every district as well as to the general public.
The concept of the book emerged afterthe cyclone Phyan. warning. The need to have a compilation of all the important information which was lying scattered was felt, added Mhaiskar.
