Stanford to train paramedics…….Prachi Rege
Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) in partnership with the Stanford School of Medicine has started a two-year post graduate programme in emergency care (PGPEC). Students will be certified by Stanford
The course is open for bachelor’s degree students in life sciences, nursing, physiotherapy or allied health sciences. “The course focuses on pre-hospital care, where paramedics need to have advanced medical skill sets,” said Venkat Changavalli, chief executive officer of EMRI.
Students will be chosen through an entrance test followed by an interview, which will take place in June 2009. “There is a dearth of skilled paramedics who can provide pre-hospital care,” said Changavalli. Practical training will take place with the help of audio visual aids and mannequins for live demonstration of emergency saving methods. EMRI will also organise guest lectures by experienced medical professionals.
