Environment
As part of our commitment to managing a successful chemical business, DFPCLs philosophy takes environment conservation and protection seriously. We believe in curtailing the generation of pollutants to eliminate and minimize end treatments.
DFPCL adheres to the regulatory requirements and standards of the State Pollution Boards and Federation of Indian Industries.
We have incorporated appropriate effluent handling and disposal systems. This helps in the continuous and daily monitoring of solid, semi-solid and gaseous affluent discharges, to keep the allowable limits in check. In the Fertiliser Plant, emissions are duly controlled by scrubbers and bag filters. Three ambient air-monitoring stations are installed in the factory premises to monitor air quality continuously.
- The Concentrated Nitric Acid Plant of the Company is the first and only plant in India to be based on the magnesium nitrate route rather than the conventional sulphuric acid route. This eliminates the generation of pollutants and facilitates the use of effluent condensate containing Nitric Acid as absorbant for Dilute Nitric Acid Plants. In the relocated Nitric Acid plant the deNOx unit has been successfully commissioned, thereby reducing NOx emission to levels lower than permitted under statutory regulations.
- In the Ammonia and Methanol Plants, waste gases containing Hydrogen and Carbon Monoxide are burnt in a flare. A separate flare to burn off Ammonia is provided for in Ammonia storage section in case of emergency.
- In order to eliminate chromate effluent, the company has recently changed over to non-chromate treatment of cooling water in the Methanol Plant. Recognising the effect of Ozone depletion due to Freon, refrigeration systems have been changed over from Freon to Ammonia as refrigerant. The Carbon Dioxide recovery solvent has been changed from Amine Guard to aMDEA, which is more environment-friendly.
- The project to convert waste gaseous Carbon-dioxide from the stack in Ammonia plant into Food Grade Liquid Carbon-dioxide and Dry Ice has been executed, thus contributing to environmental protection as well as converting the waste into a useful product.
- DFPCL believes that preservation of fossil fuels is a social responsibility. To reduce the consumption of hydrocarbons, a waste heat recovery project has been successfully commissioned in which steam is generated from the off gases of CES engines, thereby reducing the consumption of Naphtha in service boilers. The lower temperature of the final exit gases is also more conducive to the atmosphere.
- In addition to these efforts, an appreciable part of Research & Development is directed towards developing environment control measures. Employees are provided training and education to create awareness and commitment towards maintaining the required standards in the company. DFPCL is also working at spreading awareness and helping small industries and customers in solving any environment-related problems.
Effluent Treatment Facilities
Effluent Treatment Facilities and waste management, generally the neglected area in any chemical company is given a lot of importance in DFCPL.
An Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) at our factory is in operation, which comprises physiochemical and biological treatment. A Sewage Treatment Plant has been provided to treat all sanitary waste generated in the factory complex. A new scheme for using treated water for gardening and sanitary purposes is under implementation.
The environment cell of the Company, which works under Technical Services, continuously monitors pollution control equipment. A third party environment statement report is commissioned annually, so that we benchmark with the best global practices.
Various safety systems, such as carrying out HAZOPS, Risk Assessments, On Site Emergency Plans, Safety Audits and Formulation of Safety Operating Procedures etc, are part of our regular practices.
Consecutively for the last three years, the British Safety Council, in recognition of its safety procedures and low rate of accidents, has presented a safety award to DFPCL.
Community
The work done by the Deepak Group in social and environmental spheres is a reflection of the group’s commitment to the chemical industry as well as to society at large.
The Company’s “Vision” statement lays special emphasis on “sustained growth in harmony with Nature”. Deepak Group has for the last two decades, been actively participating in the social and environment issues.
Social Concerns Actions speak louder than words! The Deepak Group has set an excellent example by pro-actively contributing to social causes. Deepak Group is the founder of two social organisations, viz. Deepak Medical Foundation (DMF) and Deepak Charitable Trust (DCT) which have been actively working with local communities. The Deepak Medical Foundation and Deepak Charitable Trust are together known as DEEPAK FOUNDATION.
Deepak Charitable Trust: DCT was formed in 1988, to help the victims affected by the cyclone in Saurashtra. DCT went ahead to organise cattle camps, where a large number of cattle were taken care of. Slowly and steadily, DCT shifted its focus to cover a larger area.
- DCT has developed Integrated Community Development Programmes, in and around Nandesari, in the state of Gujarat. The programme has benefited a total population of 50,000 approximately in 27 villages.
- Rural women, who are cattle-rearers, were educated on cattle care and on improving milk yield. These women are engaged in the Dairy Milk Co-operative Movement. The effort benefited 500 women and the turnover from the milk co-operatives reached a record of Rs. 76,13,231. More on empowerment for Women. Training of women in other skills, like making readymade garments, leathergoods, etc. to help create income opportunities. To improve economic and social conditions of women, “sangathan” were organised in 12 villages.
- DCT has also been working on programmes for adolescent development. Around 810 adolescents have been trained in livelihood skills like tailoring, repairing home appliances and motor rewinding. Counselling on reproductive health and gender issues is also provided.
- DCT has encouraged people to save money and form “Self-help Groups” or “bachat mandals”, wherein the members save every month and lend to those members who are in need of money. At Nandesari, there are 146 self-help groups with a membership of 2,646 persons. In December 2002, Deepak Charitable Trust was awarded a small grant by the American Jewish World Service, a U.S. based funding organisation, to strengthen the existing Self Help Groups.
- Deepak Group has also planned to adopt Tikkar Village, Halvad Taluka, near Little Rann of Kutch. The company plans to support activities of income generation, by providing ground water facility, increasing production of fodder, etc.
Deepak Medical Foundation: DMF conducts awareness programmes for the health and education for women and children and prevention of infant mortality. The aim of DMF is to provide preventive and curative services on an out-patient and in-patient basis.
- DMF runs a hospital at Nandesari (Dist. Baroda, Gujarat) offering medical aid to out-patient, in-patient, diagnostic, referral and emergency services. Recently, ultrasound equipment has been installed in the Hospital for diagnostic support to OBGYN work.
- DMF also runs a clinic at Taloja in Chindran village (Dist. Raigad, Maharashtra), which apart from offering out-patient and emergency services, also provides clinical services in pediatrics, obstetrics, gynaecology, leprosy, immunization etc.
- The foundation has been actively working in the area of mother and childcare and has been providing training and communication on health care. Ante-natal clinics were run in 13 villages around Nandesari to tackle reproductive health problems. More about our Interventions in reproductive and child health.
- The Foundation has initiated and supported the creation of 40 Aanganwadis, which takes care of children. This is run as a part of the government’s Integrated Child Development Scheme.
- The foundation is now working on curtailing the spread of STI/HIV/AIDS
- These efforts are being made with the support of the Department for International Development (DfID), British High Commission and the International Centre for Research on Women (ICRW). The Foundation has received recognition and support from foreign institutions such as the Population Council, UNFPA and the Ford Foundation.
Relief to earthquake victims: Continuing with its endeavour to fulfil its social commitments whenever and wherever possible, Deepak Group donated Rs.10 lacs for the earthquake victims of Gujarat on January 26, 2001. The contribution will help rehabilitate at least 25-30 earthquake affected families
