BMC says it hasn’t received HC roders
Even as High Court came down heavily on Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) on Wednesday for its failure to tackle flooding in low-lying areas due to heavy rains in the city, sources wonder why MCGM hasn’t taken action against contractors in view of the pathetic condition of roads.
Not very long ago, MCGM had in its pre-monsoon statement to the media, said that the contract of those contractors who fail to get repair work done before the monsoon season sets in, would be revoked.
However, the incessant rains over nearly five days have exposed the sorry state of roads, whose repair works haven’t been completed. Sources said, “The repair works of MCGM were given to many contractors, rather than a single contractor.
During the pre-monsoon survey in May, the deadline for contractors was extended by one month and even after that, they did complete the work. So, BMC issued notices to contractors saying that if they didn’t finish their repair work by the deadline, their contracts would be cancelled.”
However, hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on Wednesday, the court asked the civic body to file an affidavit stating what action it was contemplating against such errant contractors.
Strangely, Mohan Kadam, Executive Officer of MCGM’s Road Maintenance Department, when contacted, refused to comment.
“I haven’t received the High Court’s orders and so I will not comment on this particular issue. Let me see the orders and then I shall see what is to be done,” Kadam said.
