Colgate Reaches Out with Care in Nepal
Several community development initiatives have been implemented in the field of health, education and sports with a view to making a difference in the lives of the people in Hetauda, District: Makhwanpur, in Nepal.EducationIn the field of education, the company rewards meritorious students from Government Schools with scholarships. This initiative is the first of its kind in Hetauda that awards the top 15 rank holders in standard VIII. The scholarship is given for a period of two years. There have been 48 Colgate Scholars since October 2000.School Infrastructure Support ProgramColgate – Palmolive (Nepal) Private Limited (CPNPL), supported a unique program by adopting Tribhuwan High School in Hetauda, Nepal, giving the children a safe and healthy environment for learning.
Established in 1961 with strength of 1000 students, the school was in dire need of infrastructure support. Owing to lack of space, children were attending classes in the playground. As part of school development program, Colgate extended its support and built a block of three additional classrooms, which now accommodates over hundred additional students. The adoption program has received widespread appreciation and support from the local communities, the district administration and school authorities. This was inaugurated on 5th January 2003.HealthHealth services are an extremely expensive need for the common man and often unaffordable. In the light of this, CPNPL provides free medical and dental consultancy treatment, in Hetauda, District Makwanpur. The Company is conducting two clinics. A medical consultant has been appointed to provide free medical consultancy three times a week. The second clinic (in association with the Lions Club, Hetauda), functions once a week, and provides free dental consultancy. Both the clinics are very successful and widely appreciated by the local communities. Close to 8000 people have availed of the medical and dental consultancy since the clinics started in June 2001 and November 2001,respectively.
Colgate Rises to the Occasion:Makwanpur District witnessed some of the heaviest rains in, the year 2003 and 2004. The heavy downpour resulted in flash floods causing destruction to life and property in the district. The only road to Kathmandu, which is the lifeline of the people, was damaged at several places and being blocked by landslides. Many people were rendered homeless. Colgate joined hands with the District Administration, in both years to provide assistance to the distressed, and was one of the first to provide 200 bags of dry ration as immediate relief for the flood affected people of the district.Education gets a new fillip – Colgate constructs a new schoolDistance and time was posing to be an enormous burden on the children in a remote rural area around Hetauda in Nepal. The people of this region are economically weak and it’s difficult for them to send their children to distant Hetauda, for studies. Colgate as a responsible corporate citizen, built a school here, where accessibility is difficult, more so during monsoons. The District Authorities of Administration and Education have lauded this effort of bringing a school close to the children. The local school management too has been appreciative of Colgate providing educational facility to less privileged members of society in the area. This school was inaugurated in September 2004.
Oral health month
Free dental check-ups were organised in as many as 100 cities as part of Oral Health Month 2006. In addition to check-ups in clinics, dental examinations were done in housing societies, factories and corporate offices and also through mobile vans that covered the under-privileged areas of cities. The aim was free dental check-ups for everyone everywhere.
