Clean garbage with your pen
YUCK! If your neighbourhood looks like this, write to BMC now
MUMBAI’S solid waste management (SWM) department is giving accountability a
new dimension with the Swachha Mumbai Samiti (Clean Mumbai Committee)
instituted by Mayor Datta Dalvi. This Samiti will meet monthly to review the
progress of the implementation of the BMC Solid Waste Rules 2006. Those
rules can be read at www.karmayog.org .
R A Rajeev, additional municipal commissioner in charge of solid waste
management, has asked the NGO Council to collate grievances and suggestions
and place them in these monthly meetings for discussion.
BMC SWM officials claim that ALL waste is picked up at least once in a
24-hour period. If this is not happening in your area, then it was probably
omitted from the waste collection route. Write to the BMC accordingly and
immediately. (No emails please!) You can study the collection routes on
www.karmayog.org.
If you find the BMC is doing its job, but citizens are dirtying the place,
request the BMC to send nuisance detectors (ND). These NDs are employees of
BMC who are authorised to fine offenders.
