Community Initiatives
Carborundum Universal- A Flagship Company of Murgappa Group
Cumi has supported and engaged in activities that aim to improve the organisation’s contribution to society. The company has initiated infrastructure development in schools, hospitals by donating equipment and organising health camps along with Sugam Hospital and CUTFAST and also safety camps in the neighbourhood community. Health camp conducted by CUMI � CUTFAST has benefited 200 patients of near by Narayanapuram and Pallikkaranai villages. A team of 30 doctors from Sree Ramachandra Medical College Hospital served the health camp. A team of general physicians carried out a blood pressure and diabetic screening. Team of more than ten dentists carried out minor procedures like extraction and scaling on a dental chair they brought along. About 58 persons were beneficiaries.
A team of three eye specialists did refraction tests and prescribed glasses. With concern for “Prevention of Blindness”, the Hospital has come forward to do cataract surgery with lens implantation for a very subsidised cost. About four elderly people were to benefit from this.
The company also conducted health camps at Hosur and donations to primary health centre
Donations:
A sum of Rs.3 million was donated to M/s A.M.M Foundation , which is a philanthropic organization and manages nine institutions in the filed of education and healthcare run on Non profit basis, A sum of Rs.1.5m was donated to A.M.M Murugappa Chettiar Research Centre which is a non profit research organization engaged in research related to improvement of rural areas and also executes consultancy work and research projects in the area of fisheries development, environment, education etc.
As a part of its commitment to society the company has been extending support for improving health and hygiene of the people living in and around some of the company�s plant locations by conducting free medical and health awareness camps and distributing medicines

CUMI has initiated structured need identification with the help of Madras School of Social Work in the neighborhood community.
For example, infrastructure development in Schools, Village Hospitals and organizing Health Camps and safety camps.

CSR initiative:
We have selected Govt. Orphanage home for boys at Royapuram for our CSR initiative. It is functioning under the control of Ministry of Defense. Street children, Orphans, run away from home and caught by railway police and referred by The Juvenile Court are the inmates of the home. The
Home has 195 boys (Orphans � 85 and Reception home boys � 110) between the age group of 6 -18 years with a stark deficiency of the basic facilities and malnourished suffering from anemia ,skin infections and water borne infections like diarrhea.
A common complaint received while doing the rounds was that in spite of having a large playground there was no playing kit like Tennicoit, Volleyball, Cricket bats etc. So as corporate we decided to present some sports kit to them. On 20.06.07, Dr.John Sukumar along with two doctors from Sugam hospital conducted the Medical check up for the children, provided the prescribed medicines, deworming tablets and health tonics.
We had also arranged special lunch for all of them. Mr.Gopalan, Sr.Manager � HR presented the sports kit to the Children which included Cricket bats & balls, Foot balls, Tennicoit and Carom boards. The children were very happy to receive the kit.
Superintendent of the home thanked CUMI for the service rendered to their home.
The entire programme was coordinated under the guidance of Ms.Catherine – Social Worker.
Personality Development Programme for Employee�s Children
Two day workshop on 28.05.07 and 29.05.07 was conducted for the children between 12 � 18 years age group of our employees.
In coordination with an organization called �Humanistic Development Mission� conducted the workshop on the following contents:
Communication, relaxation, creativity, health and hygiene, time management, talent hunt, goal setting, motivation, sensitization and group life.
Games, group exercise, group presentation, story formation and interactive session are the methodology used in this programme.
Totally 16 children participated and benefited out of this programme.
Primary Health Centre
�€€€€€€€€ The society plays a major role in the growth of any organisation. In turn it is the responsibility of the organisation to reciprocate.
�€€€€€€€€ Towards this we donated medical equipment required for the Primary Health Center in Royakotta, near Dharmapuri.
�€€€€€€€€ Our company has sponsored medical equipment to Government Primary Health Centre, Kelamangalam, Hosur.
Awareness Camp on ‘Chikungunya’
Awareness Camp on Chikungunya – The camp was organized in association with the Primary Health Center & Kalamassery Municipality on 28th June 2007 at Government Higher Secondary School, Kalamassery.
The programme was inaugurated by Ms Areefa, Chairperson, Kalamassery Municipality. Followed by the Keynote address by Mr Ananthaseshan N, VP EMD. Prof. Dr Raju Antony MD, Dept of Community Medicine, Cooperative Medical College, Ernakulam took the seminar for the students along with a film show on Chikungunya awareness
Onam Sadya @ Nallukettu Orphanage
Koratty team has arranged Onam Sadya for kids at Nallukettu Orphanage.
Supported Noorul Huda English School by providing furniture’s for the school children 10th April 2007.
Eye Camp @ Maniyar
An eye camp was organized in association with Aravind Eye hospital at Maniyar on March 16th 2008. A total of 260 people from nearby locality (Vadaserikara & Ranni Perinad Panchayats) attend the camp. Medicines and spectacles were distributed at subsidized rates and 10 patients were taken for cataract surgery to be held at Aravind Eye Hospitals, Tirunelveli

- Active participation in the World Aids Day in the form of participation in Signature Campaign and rally at Hosur
- More than 20 employees donated blood on various occasions for noble cause
- Distributed free tree saplings to all employees and planted tree saplings in the schools
- Conducted emission test for all the two and four wheelers of our employees.
