Eco-Efficiency
The aim of the eco-efficiency analysis is to compare similar products or processes. This involves carrying out an overall study of alternative solutions to include a total cost determination and the calculation of ecological impact over the entire lifecycle. The results are used for the comparison with competitors. They may increase market opportunities or assist product improvement. They also provide arguments for the sales department.
The BASF Eco-Efficiency Analysis is a strategic tool that allows to examine both costs and environmental impact of products, processes or whole system solutions.

Carbon Balance
We published a carbon balance in 2008, and were the first company in industry to do so. This balance contrasts the CO2 emission-savings that are achieved with BASF products and procedures with the emissions from raw material extraction, production and product disposal.
BASF’s innovative and energy-efficient products contribute to climate protection. BASF has long been making successful use of renewable raw materials in numerous processes and constantly researches new possible usages
Acting responsibly in our Supply Chain
How carefully do carriers handle BASF’s products? Under what conditions do BASF’s technical partner companies work? How safe are our suppliers’ products and processes? More and more customers and investors are asking us these questions, and we have a clear answer: What counts for us is acting responsibly throughout the entire supply chain because we want to build stable and sustainable relationships with our business partners. This is why we choose carriers, service providers and suppliers not just on the basis of price, but also include their performance in the fields of environmental and social responsibility when making our decisions
Minimum social standards for suppliers
Acting responsibly in our dealings with suppliers also includes minimum social standards. In accordance with the United Nations’ Global Compact Initiative we insist that our suppliers do not employ children or use forced or bonded laborers. Our procurement conditions also specify that suppliers must comply with the International Labor Organization’s (ILO) employment standards
Sustainability Council
The notion of sustainability can only be effective if it is firmly integrated into organizational and management systems. We have therefore created structures to promote sustainable business activities – from strategic planning to implementation.
Society
In India, we are helping young people from underprivileged backgrounds: Along with basic equipment such as exercise books and writing materials, we provide financial help to enable up to 140 students a year to attend school
Awards
BASF receives European award for Carbon Balance
In February 2008, BASF became the first company in the world to present a comprehensive carbon balance covering its entire chemicals business. The results show that BASF products can save three times more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire amount caused by the production and disposal of all the companys products.
BASF has received Dow Jone Index Sustainability Award
