Social Impact Award 2008, On 6th September 2008 at S.P.Jain Institute of
Management & Research
Background:
S.P.Jain Institute of Management & Research’s Center for Development
of Corporate Citizenship was established in 2001 with a view to mould
management education in the Indian context with particular reference to
the NGO sector. The specific mandate for the center is to bring a focus
to students on inculcation of managerial skills by exposing them to
problems relevant to the NGO sector.
The Social Impact Award is an initiative of the Center for Development
of Corporate Citizenship,SPIJMR started in 2005.In the first year the
award showcased the success stories of the social sector and their
impact on society. In 2006 the theme was `Partnership(NGOs and
Corporates). In 2007 the award was based on the theme”Livlihood for
the Differently Abled”.
For the Social Impact Award 2008 the selected subject is “Women
Empowerment through MicrocreditSHGs.”
Why MicrocreditSHGs?
While the concept has been in existence and practice for a many years
now,the issue has become an increasingly important one particularly in
developing countries.Mr Mohammad Yunus’s pioneering work in this
segment led to the U.N. declaring 2005 to be `the year of
microcredit’.And Mr Yunus firmly believes that the right of poor
people to get loans should indeed be made a fundamental right.
We at the S.P.Jain Institute have over the last fourteen years as part
of DOCC projects collected a wealth of information and knowledge on
this subject. Our students through participation internship with NGOs as
part of their curriculam and through the execution of over 70 projects
on various themes on microcredit have done pioneering work which needs
acknowledgement. While their projects cover both a geographic spread of
India and a spread of management applications, it would be relevant to
assess what has been done in this domain particularly in the state of
Maharashtra, since the state has had a proven track record.
On this occasion we are also planning to bring out a compendium of these
DOCC project reports which will demonstrate innovative modelsframeworks
which could be used by the practisioner..
