SIES to stub it…….Prachi Nayak
Starting today students of the SIES College of Management Studies (SIESCOMS) are organising a major awareness campaign to strengthen the ban on smoking in public places.
Street plays, road shows and a walkathon will be held as part of their campaign ‘Pratigya’. “Though people are aware about the ban, they are unaware about the finer details. For example, a discotheque has become a non-smoking area; even a domestic help can ask the owner to extinguish a cigarette to avoid passive smoking,” said Akshit Gupta, a SIESCOMS student.
Students have also launched a major email campaign listing legal, health aspects and prominent zones where smoking has been banned. “The email outlines that the liability of keeping a public place smoke-free has been vested with the person in charge. We have mailed this information to over 13,000 people in Mumbai,” informed Gupta.
A roadshow on January 8, will have a van touring the city, engaging people in activities to increase awareness about the ban. On January 11, Pratigya will culminate in a walkathon from Oval Maidan to Girgaum Chowpatty covering 4.5 km.
