TECHNOLOGY NEED ASSESSMENT MEETING WITH SHG WOMEN
RUDO organized one day meeting with SHG members on 2-6-2008 at YV.Palem village in association with, Sri.Abdul Naseer, Officer, Sapthagiri Grameena Bank, YV.Palem and Smt.Padmavathi, Assistant Project Officer,Indira Kranthi (IPK) aiming to assess the need of the appropriate technologies in the existing and new livelihood sources of the SHG group members. Thirty six women from existing SHGs in YV.Palem village attended the meeting. Sri.Abdul Naseer introduced RUDO to the group member with brief note on the purposes of the meeting. Half an hour was spent for brain storming and defreezing the members to open up their ideas and views. An informal discussion was held with the SHG members to extract the information about their livelihoods and problems envisaged. The livelihood pattern among SHG women was identified as;
1. Agriculture
2. Dairy
3. Sheep/Goat Rearing
4. Petty Business (Provision store/Tiffin centre/STD
Booth/Hotel)
The percentage of the women in groups subsisting on the above sources was estimated empirically as 90% on agriculture, 80% on dairy (Milk animals), 10% sheep/goat rearing and 2% on petty businesses. Two members have tailoring and one woman has saree painting skills. One woman showed interest in paper plate making training.
The feasibility and economic viability of the above livelihood sources were discussed in the meeting. The Group members expressed views as petty buisiness, goat/sheep rearing are profitable and agriculture and dairy are not economically viable.
The short comings in the agriculture and dairy for low returns was discussed, the members revealed that that the high input cost is the reason for low returns in agriculture and dairy.
The meeting was concluded with the following decisions; women are interested to undertake micro enterprises and training need to initiate. The women expressed the revival of agriculture and dairy for profit making and the need of the technologies to adapt to sustenance.
