- The company was founded with the objective of fulfilling a basic need of society: to help people own their own homes
- HDFC has consistently maintained its focus on enabling the lower and middle income groups to access affordable housing
- In the period of over 3 decades that this company has been in the housing finance sector, it has undertaken some pioneering initiatives that raise standards for the sector, such as adopting Anti Money Laundering Standards, and providing legal and technical counseling services to potential clients before they buy their house.
- HDFC has a clearly defined CSR philosophy and uses its core competence in the housing sector for projects in micro-finance and low-income housing. (The Kottapuram Integrated Development Society, Kerala, the Gandhi Smarak Grama Seva Kendram, Kerala, and the Grameen Koota, Karnataka, are some of the organisations associated with HDFC)
- The company also partners with over 160 organisations to implement projects in community development, education, environment, child welfare, etc.

- Infosys, being in the information and knowledge sector, focuses on education as a major CSR activity through programmes that support academic research, rural reach of basic computer education, student fellowships and teacher training.
- Some innovative projects undertaken in education include the “Library for Every Rural School project”, where 10150 rural schools in Karnataka have been equipped with sets of books for a library. The Infosys Foundation has also supported the repair and reconstruction of old school buildings in Karnataka, thus strengthening the existing education systems in place.
- Infosys implements its social initiatives through the Infosys Foundation that is focused on the destitutes, the rural poor, the mentally challenged and the economically disadvantaged sections of society.
- The Infosys Foundation also uniquely supports artists and artisans with the objective of preserving and reviving cultural and artistic traditions ofIndia.
- Being one of the largest companies in the IT sector, that is considered a relatively low-impact sector in terms of business processes, Infosys has adopted several environmentally-friendly and energy efficient initiatives at its offices across the country, so as to reduce consumption of power, water and paper.
- Recycling of waste, rain water harvesting, responsible e-waste disposal and waste water recycling are some of the practices implemented at all Infosys campuses.

- Tata Steel completes one hundred years of operation in 2007, and is an example of a company that was founded on “sound and straightforward business principles, considering the interests of all stakeholders as their own…”
- Tata Steel, being in Iron and Steel manufacture, that is considered to be a “high-impact” industry, has been working in a forward, planned and pro-active manner from the start of its operations, to minimize damage and negative impact of its processes. This is one of the clear differences from other companies engaged in similar activities that work backwards to set-right the damage already done by their processes.
- All processes are focused on improving the quality of life for all that are involved or connected with the company, from the local rural and tribal communities, to the environment around the steel plant, to the industrial city ofJamshedpur.
- Some of the CSR activities of Tata Steel are in the areas of community development, tribal upliftment, education, health care and environment.
- Environment management at Tata Steel is of one of the highest standards adopted anywhere and includes reduction of energy use, reduction of emissions, use of alternative energy sources, responsible disposal of hazardous waste, recycling of water and solid waste and regeneration of forests and tree cover.

4. Company: Titan Industries Ltd

- Titan Industries has a clearly defined policy on Social Responsibility and believes that “inclusive development is the route to sustainable development”
- In keeping with this policy, Titan has been providing significant employment opportunities for the physically challenged amongst its workforce.
- As part of Titan’s community development initiatives, the company partners with local self help groups amongst rural women for outsourcing watch components, as part of the Meadow Women’s Empowerment Project.
- Titan also undertakes programmes in education and health care in the locations where it operates, as well as partners with NGOs to implement projects all over India.
- Titan also has a Whistle-blower policy (as part of the Tata Code of Conduct) where every employee can approach the management to report instances of corruption or violation of rules.
- Despite being in a relatively low-impact industry, Titan has pro-actively adopted high environment management standards for all its operations.
