Most of the cases that come up before the Maharashtra State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission are against builders, said BB Vagyani, the president of the forum.
Since the inception of the commission in 1989, as many as 2,219 cases have been filed against builders, out of which 1,272 are still pending.
Among all the cases filed here or appealed against, most of them are against builders for cheating customers. The commission can only entertain complaints in which the value of goods or services and compensation, if any, claimed is between Rs20 lakh to Rs1 crore.
It also decides on the appeals filed against the judgements of the District Forums. Interestingly, the number of cases filed before the two district forums in the city against builders since 1993 is 29,903, of which 1,649 are still pending, Vagyani said.
The total number of cases filed before the commission till date is 43,070 which include appeals against the district forum orders. Around 17,588 cases are still pending.
The Commission, however, is unable to deal with the backlog as the government has failed to provide it with adequate funds or staff since the last four years, Vagyani said. Despite several complaints to the government, no action has been taken yet, he added.
