Mumbai will have new CRZ boundaries from 2013
The civic body will soon redraw city’s map to help finalise the coastal regulation zones (CRZ). The exercise will include marking high tide and low tide lines on seashores and boundaries for gaothans and koliwadas. In January, the Centre issued a notification to all local self-governments, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to appoint a consultant to study the coastal line, demark and fix pointers for CRZ classification. The BMC will have to finish mapping by January 2013.
On Thursday, the civic standing committee appointed Chennai-based Institute of Remote Sensing (Anna University) for the exercise. The institute will prepare the map after identifying shoreline, water bodies with a cadastral map in the scale of 1:4000. The map will also classify all areas within the city which fall under the CRZ I (sensitive area), CRZ II (up to 500 metres from coastline), CRZ III (gaothan and koliwada) and CRZ IV (area of up to 12 nautical miles into the sea) as per the CRZ 2011 notification. After inviting suggestion and objections from citizens, the civic body will fix pillars demarcating these belts.
During the discussion in the standing committee meeting, members of all parties urged the administration to complete the work early. “The BMC should give some incentive to the firm to complete the mapping early as many development projects are stuck,” said BJP leader Ashish Shelar. Mangesh Sangle of the MNS pointed out that 47 buildings in Vikhorli’s Kannamwar Nagar could not go for reconstruction because of CRZ norms.
