Adopting green lifestyle forafamily can mean saving of Rs 24,514per annum or close to Rs 2,000 per month withoutmuchadditional costs, environment ministrysaid on Thursday.
A guide to lowcarbonlifestyle brought out by the ministry with UnitedNations Development Programme (UNDP) and Deutsche Gesellshaft fur Technische Zussammenardeit (GTZ), a German research body,has 15 point manual,which people can adopt to makeahugesaving.
The guide has come at the timewhen India has been rated as worldsthirdlargest global warming causing carbon dioxide and rich countries areasking India and China to take obligatory emission cuts.
The average carbonfootprint ofanIndian is 4.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year,which is about four times less than that of aperson in Europe and United States. Indias lowcarbonfoot print is mainly because of 64 per cent of population in rural India have averageemission less than one tonne per annum.
But, the ministrysguide said reducing carbon emission is ahomogenous goal forone and all irrespectiveofeconomic status or nationality. It up to each one of us to apply our creativeknowledgeto move towardsthe common goal and also save money,the guide said.
The guide tries to tell citizens thattheyshould opt forBureau of Energy Efficiency fivestar rated appliances, which can mean saving of Rs 2,780per annumonelectricitybill.Higher energyefficient appliances cost morebutadditionalmoneypaid is redeemed in two to three depending on usage.
A family can save the most, if theygiverest to their car.Walking akminsteadofusing acar can saveRs1,047andputting ignition off at traffic lights another Rs 1,417.
