Good News of the Day:
What does life look like through a child’s eyes? “My Life as a Child” is a six-part documentary series with that very premise, providing video cameras to 20 children in a diverse group from around America. The result is an unusual marriage of YouTube sensibility and professional filmmaking, a video collage of 21st century American childhood. The series includes portraits of Tina, a 9-year-old Hurricane Katrina survivor who lives in a FEMA trailer in New Orleans with her mother; Elif, an 11-year-old from suburban Pittsburgh whose Muslim family came to the United States from Turkey; Marc, a 7-year-old piano prodigy from Los Angeles; Cole, an 8-year-old in Los Angeles with cerebral palsy who uses a wheelchair. The young filmmakers were free to focus on whatever they wished, guided by the producers’ questions about their particular challenges and what defines them.
