Second reclamation, if locals have their way ………Sukhada Tatke
Mumbai: The spirit of public enterprise is alive and kicking. Residents of Bandra Reclamation have come up with innovative, eco-friendly ideas that will change life in the area. Two proposals have been submitted by the Bandra Reclamation Area Volunteers’ Organisation (Bravo) to the BMC—one for a solid waste management plant to convert garbage to electricity, another for a rainwater harvesting plant.
About five tonnes of garbage per day generated from Reclamation, Bandra market, Rang Sharda auditorium, Spastic Society, IES high school, Lilavati hospital and the green waste from the promenade, is proposed to be treated and converted into biogas, and the electricity produced from it used to light up the Reclamation, the proposal said. Residents also proposed to harvest rainwater running down the slope of the bridge linking Bandra east to west, and use it for non-potable purposes. The Celebrate Bandra Festival association is expected to part-fund the projects, with help from corporates and the BMC.
City office buildings best in saving energy
Mumbai has the maximum number of energy-saving office buildings in the country—10 of the 49 rated in a first time national-level exercise. But it has only one five-star rated building, whereas cities like Kochi and Chennai have more, reports Chittaranjan Tembhekar. The ratings are from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
