The Alpha Foundation promotes high quality education through < a href=’http://www.irsindia.org/’ target=’_blank’>Icfai Republic Schools to the lesser privileged children in India. IRS has reached 6085 children through 12 full-fledged schools and 7 bridge schools in Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bangalore, Mumbai, Agartala and Aizawal. Following is a brief account of some of the activities organized by our children.
Tiny Tot’s Vegetable Market
Students always learn better through live examples of the lessons taught in the class. To give first hand knowledge and experience on a lesson “The Vegetable Market”, the pre-primary teachers of IRS Balanagar put up a Raithu Bazaar (Farmers’ Market) with the active participation of 30 little students on February 12, 2009.
The bazaar which managed to look like an exact replica of a Raithu Bazaar was buzzing with activity throughout. The vegetables had been brought from the farms by the teachers and the little tots played the shopkeepers. The teachers were equally excited as the children.
This was one fine example of hands-on learning for the students. Through this exercise, the children were able to
understand the concepts of buying and selling, measuring the different varities of vegetables and fruits as well as their nutritional value.
Our Science Fair in Ch. Shalini’s Own Words
Every month we present one article / feature by a student of Icfai RepublicSchool. This month we present a report on a science exhibition conducted at IRS Rasoolpura, Hyderabad, India. It is in the own words of Ch. Shalini (Class 6).
Children of IRS Rasoolpura had conducted a mini science fair on February 28, 2009, on the occasion of National Science Day. We conducted this fair to exhibit our talents
and boost our self – confidence. Nearly 35 to 40 models were displayed covering differenttopics like solar system, environment, habitats, electrical circuit, hot dust, heat conductors, forest, igloo, properties of magnets etc.
I have chosen the solar system model. As I want to make the students understand the concept of planets and their orbits clearly. It took three days time to prepare the model with thermocol. We were very excited, when we made the students of other classes, parents and our co-curricular teachers to understand about the rotation and revolution of planets. They appreciated our presentation.
After participating in this exhibition we developed more interest towards science. Most of the models displayed were done as classroom activities. We now understand that models and activities help us to get clear conceptual understanding. The exhibition created an awareness about importance of science in our daily life.
The exhibition provided us with an opportunity to have better interaction between teachers and other class students.
