Financial constraints often prevent youth with basic schooling or from pursuing higher education. Their ambition is wasted on low-income jobs, robbing them of the chance to excel in careers that they would have had, had they been given a chance.
In partnership with HOPE Foundation, iCARE participates in imparting IT education to youth from underprivileged families. iCARE makes it possible for youth with the aptitude and inclination for IT to take the first step in their chosen career path.
The first IT Education Center was started at Rajpalya, where close to 60 students have been trained since June 2007. The success enjoyed by this venture encouraged the start of a second center in Varathur Village at a place close to the government school and college. Now, a small chain of low-cost IT Education Centers are being planned by iCARE.
These centers will have:
- Trained staff
- Latest curriculum
- Flexible timings
- Easy access
Varthur Village School Project
The renovation project at the primary school at Varthur Village, Bangalore, involved several aspects of infrastructure improvement.
A compound wall was constructed around the campus making the school safe for the children. Basic facilities like restrooms were built. Storage racks and classroom resources were delivered. Teaching equipment was provided for the teachers. Further, computer training was given to the teachers to encourage the use of computers in teaching.
Good Life Centre and Siragu Montessori School
In partnership with Good Life Centre and Siragu Montessori School, iCARE has contributed educational aids, uniforms and other basic resources for the school children. The iGATORs at Chennai frequent these schools and make it a point to celebrate festivals with the school children. Gifts are shared, music and dance follow.
Samarthanam
iCAREs partnership with Samarthanam, an organization that works with the differently-abled children, gains strength each year. Samarthanam works with these children imparting education and other life skills to them. Samarthanam is being provided financial aid to construct their hostel.
iCARE raised Fifty Crore Indian Rupees (INR 500,000,000) to provide mid-day meals for 10,000 children at Samarthanam. This was possible due to the payroll contribution from iGATE employees in addition to the corporate iCARE budget for the Samarthanam mid-day meal program.
Beyond donating money, iGATORs also volunteer to work at Samarthanam by reading to the visually challenged, training the faculty and interacting with children.
Promoting Crafts
iCARE partners Sahaj, a fair-trade organization working with craftswomen from the Bhil community for tribal craft promotions. Supporting their efforts, Sahaj encourages the work of over 1500 Bhil women, skilled in bamboo work, quilting and bead work. This ensures sustained income generation opportunities for the Bhils.
Employment of Local Talent
Campus gardens are maintained by members of the local communities, which iGATE prefers, to using extensive mechanization. This not only creates a means of livelihood for the villagers but is also more environments friendly. This initiative received recognition when we won the First prize for the Best Campus in Mysore from The Mysore Horticultural Society.
Providing Basics
iCARE initiated a clothes collection campaign at Bangalore with the intention of meeting the needs of those who are deprived of the basic necessities of life. iGATORs took this opportunity to contribute clothes, footwear, toys, medical kits, and other items required for the basic needs of more than 1000 people. The clothes collected were distributed with the help of R.K. Foundation to homes and shelters for destitute children and women. The inhabitants of elders homes in rural parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh were also helped through this initiative
