Socio Economic Management
Go Beyond’ is the one principle that sets E.I.D Parry well apart from its contemporaries. Apart from providing livelihood for scores of people the company concentrates its efforts towards accomplishing socio-economic objectives. There are constant efforts undertaken to enrich the lives of those around who are associated with the company. Some of the more popular measures undertaken by Parrys for development are:
Roads
Parrys has laid several roads in the general vicinity of its factories, helping the local populace. The Nellikuppam plant is a classic example as the company has been responsible for laying and developing roads in the village. This has in turn contributed to the development of the areas in and around Nellikuppam. Quoting Mr.Mathiyalagan, Sr.Manager Projects, at the Nellikuppam plant and a native resident of the town, “Nellikuppam would have been nothing but a road linking Cuddalore and Punroti, but for the existence of E.I.D.Parry”.
Hospitals
The Company provides excellent medical facilities not only for its employees but also to other local residents. The Murugappa group has formed its own trust in order to contribute towards building hospitals and providing good medical facilities. These medical facilities are made available at very low prices ensuring that they are affordable by the poorer segment of society. Ms.Amruthavalli, a farm labourer near the Pudukottai unit states, “timely medical intervention has saved many a life for usin this regard we are extremely thankful to the presence of Parrys for they have not only given us a livelihood but have also ensured a good life for us”.
Farmland and Development
Over the years, Parrys has developed about 90,000 acres of land under sugarcane cultivation and deals with almost 70000 farmers engaged in sugarcane cultivation. The factories are a testimony of the company’s commitment to the socio-economic development of the farming community.
As part of this commitment, services are provided to farmers in the arenas of nursery management, sampling of soil for fertilizer application, regular demonstrations and field visits to create an awareness on new technologies. Regular information dissemination and awareness is created through training of farmers. In house publications, pamphlets, television, video films and radio are also used as medium of communication. For the first time in India, crop insurance for sugarcane was introduced at Nellikuppam.
Afforestation
Parrys has been responsible for contributing a lot towards maintaining the ecological balance. By working in alliance with governmental and non-governmental agencies, E.I.D. Parry has managed to plant over 25000 saplings in their factories and operational areas in the previous three years. They have also been instrumental in forming alliances with Lead Banks for financing Drip Irrigation, pump sets, and tractors etc., Mr. VenuPillai, a local sugarcane grower, acknowledging the various efforts undertaken by Parrys states, “We live along with Parrys and learn a lot from them. We have developed a lot of respect for the environment which supports us”.
Community Building
There are myriad ways through which EID Parry has touched and enriched the lives of communities that are closely acquainted with them. Parrys has a strong ‘people’ focus and works around the concept of ‘EmployeeEmployee and beyond’. A designated Industrial Social Worker takes care of the needs of the workers and their families.
Further the working culture has been redefined with the introduction of Autonomous Work Teams. This experiment has been implemented successfully for three years and is unique to the sugar industry. The concept of AWT entails empowerment of team members wherein each member of the team performs many activities. Team members get appropriate multidisciplinary training to collapse job categories.
The various interventions are focused on the employee, the spouse and the children. They are:
- Self Help Groups
- Self Development initiatives – the Theatre Skills Group, Alcoholics Anonymous groups, Mass awareness programmes, Quality of life programmes, Stress management etc
- Summer camps, personality development workshops, career guidance workshops etc for children
- Workplace and family counselling
- Interventions with cane farmers
- Home visits made to employee homes in an attempt to reduce alcoholism, absenteeism, and indebtedness.
- Providing basic infrastructure to primary health centers and government hospitals.
- Working actively with the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation for formation of SHGs in their operational areas.
- Inviting active employee participation for blood donation camps conducted every year.
Enabling processes like recruitment, training, competency development, communication, problem solving, empowerment etc. follow a systematic and scientific approach. All these efforts have resulted in the formation of a highly competitive and satisfied work force, and a participative, lean, and responsive work culture.
