Environment
Your Company devotes considerable time and resources to meet the applicable environmental norms and regulations by developing and implementing several environmental protection measures.
Your Company obtained approval from the Union Ministry of Environment & Forests for three of its Clean Development Mechanism Projects viz., Power Generation from Windmill, Energy Optimization in Gas Turbine and Hydrogen Recovery from Off Gases. Upon validation, these projects will be submitted to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change for Registration.

Highlights pertaining to the Environment performance of the Company include:
�€€€€€€€ Completion of Performance Guarantee Test Run for 2.5 MGD Sewage Reclamation Plant in June 2007.
�€€€€€€€ Commissioning of additional line for receipt of Secondary Treated Sewage in June 2007.
�€€€€€€€ Signing of Agreement with Metro water for supply of 5.0 MGD Secondary Treated Sewage for the Sewage Reclamation Plant.
�€€€€€€€ Signing of Agreement with M/s Tamil Nadu Waste Management Ltd. for disposal of hazardous waste in October 2007.
�€€€€€€€ Completion of Bio-remediation of 2000 MT of sludge
Community
Your Company views CSR as a tool to align its business operations with the social and environmental values. Your Company has demonstrated its social consciousness and remained as a friendly neighbour to the society to which it belongs, i.e. Manali, Panangudi and its neighbourhood villages.
Although Community Development activities have been carried out since the inception of the Company, a Community Development Policy was formulated in the year 2004 and the Company�s CSR activities are guided by such well laid out Policy.
During the year, the Company has spent a sum of Rs. 156 lakhs towards Community Development activities focusing on health care, education infrastructure, sports development, women empowerment, etc.
Some of the Community Development Projects undertaken by the Company during the year include the following :
�€€€€€€€ Sponsoring of SC/ST rural women to one year Nursing Assistant Course which helped all of them find employment in hospitals in and around Chennai.
�€€€€€€€ Sponsoring of unemployed Scheduled Caste youth living in and around Manali for 3 months course in Electrician and Fitter (Maintenance) at National Small Industries Corporation (Technical Service Centre), Chennai, which helped them find suitable employment.
�€€€€€€€ Construction of 3 Overhead Tanks for supply of water to Manali and neighbourhood villages through Lions Club, Nungambakkam with financial assistance from OIDB Drought Relief Trust, New Delhi.
Notable contributions towards Community Development activities made during the year include:
�€€€€€€€ Contribution of Rs.30 Lakhs to National Agro Foundation (NAF) towards establishment of Tissue Culture Block located at their R&D Centre in Chennai
�€€€€€€€ Contribution of Rs.50 Lakhs to the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority towards Chennai Open Tennis Tournament.
�€€€€€€€ Donation of Rs.5 Lakhs to Sankara Eye Hospital for purchase of a vehicle for carrying out their activities in the service of poor and downtrodden.
�€€€€€€€ Donation of Rs.5 lakhs to Dr.Ambedkar Govt. Arts College, Vyasarpadi, Chennai for construction of Class Rooms.
�€€€€€€€ Distribution of Rs.3 Lakhs towards Scholarship to 408 meritorious students studying in the neighbourhood villages.
�€€€€€€€ Distribution of utensils valued at Rs.3 Lakhs to Irula Tribal Women�s Welfare Society, Chengalpet.
Welfare of Women
- As of March 31,2008, 76 women employees are on the rolls of the Company (previous year: 73), of whom 26 are in the Supervisory Grade (previous year: 23) and 50 are in Non supervisory Grade (previous year: 50), constituting 3.44% of the total Supervisory employees and 5.38% of the total Non-supervisory employees.
- One-day program on �Career Women � Challenges and Opportunities� was organized in January 2008, wherein issues like gender difference, awareness of social and economic developments, managing stress for healthy life, diet tips coupled with aerobic exercises were deliberated.
- International Women�s Day was celebrated on 7th and 8th of March 2008 by organizing a programme on the theme �The New Millennium women � Dreams Unlimited� in which eminent professionals from various fields delivered lectures on topics of varied interests on women development and empowerment.
- Women employees were nominated to attend National/Regional Meets conducted by the forum for Women In Public Sector (WIPS).
Global Compact.
�€€€€€€€ Since 2004, CPCL is a member of the Global Compact Programme initiated by the Secretary-General of United Nations, which seeks to promote responsible corporate citizenship in the form of adherence to the 10 principles of Global Compact encompassing the areas of Human rights, Labour, Environment and anti-corruption. The UN Global Compact programme acts as a bridge between traditional policy makers (UN and Governments) and business sector in order to facilitate more sustainable and efficient world order.
�€€€€€€€ As a member of this programme, CPCL has implemented all the 10 Global Compact principles throughout its operations and regularly communicate its progress, both externally as well as internally. Annual Report on Company�s adherence to Global Compact is sent to the UN Chapter on Global Compact.
�€€€€€€€ To cite a specific example of its adherence to the principle of �Abolition of Child Labour�, only persons who are 18 years and above are allowed to work in CPCL. It is ensured that the contractors / sub-contractors do not employ minors. Similarly, with respect to the principle �Initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility�, CPCL has commissioned a 17.6 MW Wind Mill Farm in September 2007 for generation of power, which will be wheeled, for utilization in its 5.8 MGD Seawater Desalination Plant.
CPCL made a presentation on its CSR activities during the National Convention of the Global Compact Society at New Delhi in December 2007, which was chaired by the Head of United Nations Global Compact Office.
