Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation & Awards
In 1976, the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation was established for promoting Gandhian constructive programmes and assisting constructive workers who devoted themselves to the national cause. The foundation has instituted four annual awards, each carrying a cash prize of Rs. 500,000/- or its equivalent in foreign currency, a citation and a trophy.The awards are intended to recognise outstanding contribution in – � Constructive work � Application of science and technology for rural development � Upliftment and welfare of women and children and/or Gandhian constructive work by women workers � Promotion of Gandhian values outside India by individuals other than Indian citizens On the occasion of the Jamnalal Bajaj Birth Centenary, the foundation conferred on Dr. Nelson Mandela, a Special Award of Rs. 500,000, a citation and a specially sculptured trophy. The foundation has undertaken several rural development programmes in the Wardha district, Maharashtra, Kheri district and Shikohabad near Ferozabad in Uttar Pradesh. It also extends financial assistance to institutions and individuals engaged in social and welfare programmes.
Jamnalal Bajaj Seva Trust
Soon after the demise of Jamnalalji in 1942, as per his wishes, the first charitable trust, Jamnalal Bajaj Seva Trust was established. With an initial corpus of Rs. 500,000, that was, Jamnalalji’s entire share in the family wealth.
Gandhiji himself drafted the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the trust and finalized its objectives.
Initially, the trust assisted Sarvodaya workers and Gandhian constructive programmes.
In 1960, at the suggestion of Acharya Vinoba Bhave, the trust purchased about 400 acres of land on the outskirts of Bangalore to establish an International Sarvodaya Centre-Vishwaneedam. For promoting agriculture, dairy development, rural development and training local women and youth for self-employment.
In 1961, the trust made a donation to the University of Mumbai for estab.lishing the first management institute in Mumbai, the Jamnalar Bajaj Institute of Management Studies.
The trust has also been contributing its share to the promotion of arts and culture through the Kamalnayan Bajaj Hall and Art Gallery. The art gallery is used to display the artistic works of painters and sculptors. The art gallery also provides an opportunity to budding artists to showcase their talents.
Jankidevi Bajaj Gram Vikas Sanstha
The main objective of this trust is to act as a catalyst for the participation of rural community in improving their quality of life, eliminating poverty, empowering women, development of human and natural resources, promoting ecological balance, etc. Presently this is done in 24 remote and backward villages in Khed and Maval talukasofPune, Paithan and Gangapurtalukasof Aurangabad. Activities undertaken by the trust and rural community include: � Water conservation projects for improving agricultural productivity � Construction of latrines � Family size biogas plants � Training women in using improved technology for storage of foodgrains � Goat rearing projects owned and managed by women � Vermiculture projects � Improving agricultural implements in 11 villages � Dairy development � Family planning particularly tubectomy operations � Polio immunisation campaigns � Securing loans for women members for both consumption and income generation
Rural development
The Bajaj Group carries on rural development and welfare activities through its different trusts and companies.
Bajaj Auto, Hind lamps, Jankidevi Bajaj Gram Vikas Sanstha, Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation, Jamnalal Kaniram Bajaj Trust and Jamnalal Bajaj Seva Trust with funding partnership with CAPART, Khadi & Village Industries Commision, NEDA, respective State Governments and beneficiaries, all together undertake these rural development activities. In various areas like-
�Wardha, Pune and Aurangabad districts of Maharashtra
�Villages surrounding Shikohabad in U.P.
�The Kashi-ka-bas village, birth place of Jamnalalji and some of the surrounding villages in Sikar district of Rajasthan
�In some of the villages adjoining Vishwaneedam, Bangalore
These rural development activities are aimed at
income generation, health, sanitation, supply of pure drinking water, improved agricultural practices, horticulture, social forestry and waste-land reclamation as well as training youth for self-employment. Few villages are also being developed as models of rural development.
In Wardha, the emphasis has been on construction and propagation of low-cost individual latrines. More than 10,000 latrines in more than 150 villages have been constructed in the Wardha district. A Sanitation Training Centre for training government officials and NGOs in all aspects of sanitation and a Sanitation Par displaying models of individual latrines have also been developed with financial support fro UNICEF and Government of Maharashtra.
In addition, various educational activities have been undertaken by the group. These include maintenance and running of Bal Sanskar Kendras and Balwadis, tailoring classes, literacy and hobby classes, training programmes for self-employment, study tours, motivational meetings, etc
Their other rural development activities include:

Kamalnayan Bajaj Hospital
The Marathwada Medical & Research Institute has provided full-fledged medical facilities to the people of Aurangabad through the Kamalnayan Bajaj HospitalSince 1988, the hospital offers many diagnostic and treatment facilities under one roof at affordable charges. A team of dedicated doctors of outstanding repute with experienced technicians serve patients round the clock. In August 2003, it has expanded to 135 beds at an investment of Rs.190 million, and shifted to a large, new premises.
IMC Ladies’ Wing Jankidevi Bajaj Puraskar for Rural Entrepreneurship
Bajaj Electricals Ltd. made a donation to the Ladies’ Wing of the Indian Merchants Chamber for instituting this Annual Award, which includes a cash prize of Rs. 50,000, a citation anda certificate. Then, with an additional donation made by -Bajaj Electricals Ltd., the amount of the cash prize was increased to Rs. 150,000.
Shiksha Mandal Wardha
In 1914, Jamnalalji and his associate Shri Shrikishandas Jajoo established the Shiksha Mandal for propagating education.IT had the good fortune of receiving guidance of Gandhiji and other national leaders. It was very much a part of the national movement.It also has the honour of being the first educational institution in India to prepare textbooks in Hindi and Marathi for graduate courses & conducting examinations in these languages.Three Commerce Colleges, one each at Wardha, Nagpur and Jabalpur, a Science College and Agricultural and Rural Institute and a Polytechnic at Wardha, are all run by the Mandal. These impart education to nearly 10,000 boys and girls.Besides these, the Mandal is actively associated with developmental activities in the rural areas with a view to helping, educating and motivating local farmers and their family members.
Fujii Guruji Memorial Trust
The trust was established on 12th August 1988. In memory of the Venerable Nichidatsu Fujii, the founding preceptor of ‘Nippozan Myohoji’. He met Gandhiji and became his life-long admirer. Gandhiji, too, impressed by his infinite clarity of purpose and dedication to peace, named him Fujii Guruji.The main objectives of the trust are: � To propagate the message of Lord Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi of world peace, love, non-violence and equality of all religions. � To organise and conduct similar other activities for the benefit of humanity at large based on the Sarvodaya philosophy � To organise exhibitions, publish literature, establish libraries and build monuments for the promotion of the objectives of the trust.
Consumer Protection
In 1988, to promote high standards of integrity and fairness among small, medium and large businesses and industrial enterprises, the Bajaj Group gave a donation to CFBP for instituting annual awards in the name of Jamnalal Bajaj. In the Jamnalal Bajaj Centenary year, the Bajaj Group made a donation of Rs. 3.5 million to the S.N.D.T. Women’s University for setting up a CFBP Food Testing Laboratory. This was to enable people to get food items and medicines tested for purity
Other activities
Over and above the philanthropic activities directly undertaken by the Bajaj Group charitable trusts, several social, cultural and health care projects have been rendered financial support by trusts promoted by the group. Some of the recipients are Gujarat Vidyapeeth, Indian School of Business, Poona Medical Research Foundation, Kasturba Health Society, Indian Burns Research Society, K.E.M. Hospital & Research Centre, Breach Candy Hospital, Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Indian National Theatre, etc.
