CSR activities:
Air pollution :
In Coalfields the air pollution is caused mainly due to airborne dust caused by handling and transportation of coal and solid waste
The dust is controlled at source by
1.Installation of Fixed sprinklers at CHP and coal stock yard etc have been provided to suppress the dust. In all the major CHPs fixed sprinklers have been provided at the transfer points and Bunkers.
2.Fixed as well as mobile sprinklers to sprinkle water on the transportation roads. Each project has 3-4 mobile water sprinklers.
3.By avoiding spillage of Coal from trucks on roads in the following manner
a.All Coal transportation trucks going out of the Projects are compulsorily covered by tarpaulins
b.Overloading of trucks are controlled through suitable agreement clauses in contract with transporters.
c.Substantial road improvement works are being taken in all projects
4.Manual sweeping of roads in many projects.
5.Plantation of trees in and around colony and around source. It is further elaborated under plantation head.
6.In an effort to reduce this pollution WCL has dispensed with Domestic Coal supply and LPG reimbursement is being made to the employees working in mines.
- B) Water Pollution :
In coalfields no chemical pollutants are generated and mainly suspended solids pollute the water to some extent .
Water pollution – Mitigation Measures :
1.Mine discharge effluents that come out due to pumping operations are treated by construction of Sedimentation tanks for the removal of the suspended solids. All mines have such sedimentation tanks.
2.In Work Shops, due to washing during maintenance of Heavy Earth moving machineries oil and grease and TSS are found in excess of permissible limits in the Work Shop effluents. The Effluent from Work shop is treated in effluent treatment plants. There are 21 Work Shop effluent treatment plants functioning in various Work Shops. Besides 1 Work shop ETP is under Construction. Most of the time treated effluent is recycled and used for washing again.
Land Reclamation :
Over Burden Dumps
The degradation of land due to open cast mining is taken care of by following activities. The activity consist of two parts namely 1) Technical reclamation followed by 2) Biological reclamation
- Technical Reclamation
Leveling and terracing, Gully plugging, Top Surface drainage, Filling of cracks and fissures and Coil matting where ever necessary.
- Biological Reclamation
Broadcasting of grass seeds, Bio-technical means like using micro culture and Plantation.

After acquisition density of plantation is around 2000 trees /Ha. Further we have planted very useful trees timber value trees like Teak, Shivan, Shishoo, Shirus etc, Medicinal Plants like Neam, Awala, Karanj, Khair etc. and Fruit trees like Jamun, Vilaithi Chinch, Sitaphal etc. Our plantation works have also helped WCL to win many awards.
