CSR activities:
Torrent Power lives by these ‘Values for Life’ and believes that while the interests of investors and stakeholders are being taken care of, the enterprise also needs to be driven by a sense of purpose and a much larger set of objectives.
While ‘increase in profits’ and ‘enhanced shareholder value’ are the bottom lines that Torrent Power is focused on, it has neither side stepped nor overlooked the two other bottom lines – environment care and community welfare.
Torrent Power subscribes to the thought that no business can continue to blossom in a deprived society where moral and ethical values continue to erode. In this age of ubiquitous communication and greater emphasis on transparency at all levels, consumers are unlikely to relate to a company that does not meet up to their expectations of an ethically and socially responsible behaviour. Torrent Power recognises that environmental and social considerations are the two fundamental pillars which sustain long-term business survival and growth.
Apart from achieving excellence in its businesses, Torrent Power strives to become a responsible corporate citizen and stands firmly committed towards the betterment of society. Over the years, Torrent Power has been actively involved in several community welfare projects that are run with the highest standards in humanitarian service.
Torrent Power’s journey into the hearts of the people of Gujarat is not just about money and resources. It is about being humane and being sensitive to the community. About a non-stop commitment to its sense of purpose. And about making a difference.
Apart from significant involvement in Earthquake Rehabilitation, Institution Building, Environment Care, Community Welfare and Slum Electrification, Torrent’s other notable contributions include establishment and financial support to dispensaries, health foundations, & community centres along with setting up of hostels for meritorious students.
Environment Care
Guided by its commitment to preserve the environment, Torrent Power has taken several steps to sustain the ecological balance. All generation plants of Torrent Power adhere to the stringent environment preservation and pollution control norms. Torrent Power has also undertaken development of vast green belts and afforestation in the plant area and at ash disposal sites. 90 meter tall chimneys for better dispersion of flue gases in the air, very high efficiency electrostatic precipitators to remove fly ash from gases emitted from chimneys, regular monitoring of pollutants like Sulfur Oxides, Nitrogen Oxides and Stack Pollution Monitoring in flue gases – these are just some of the initiatives that reflect Torrent’s commitment to environment care. Torrent continues to use imported, low ash coal to reduce ash production and regularly carries out environment audit through Gujarat Pollution Control Board approved auditors. The recent initiative of replacement of the present wet ash handling system with a dry ash handling and disposal system at a cost of approx. Rs. 25 crores will reduce the water consumption significantly by almost 10,000 m3/day. Additionally, this will facilitate availability of dry, reactive ash for potential ash utilization in manufacture of cement, ceramic products, brick and other building materials
Earthquake Rehabilitation:In 2001, when Gujarat was rocked by one of the worst earthquakes in Indian history, the Torrent Group was amongst the first corporate houses to rush in medical aid and relief supplies immediately. Torrent is also the major patron of a fully equipped 60-bed hospital at Kutch in Gujarat (India) – the only one of its kind geared for psychological rehabilitation in the region. Torrent Power employees worked day in and day out to restore power in the worst affected areas of kutch.
Institution Building
Realizing the need for specialized hospitals, Torrent has established and manages medical institutions such as the Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre and the U. N. Mehta
Community Welfare
Ahmedabad, a bustling city with a population of over 4 million is the industrial capital of Gujarat. Sadly though, it is starved of great public places and lacks adequate green belts. The reconstruction of Parimal garden (in Ahmedabad) by Torrent has revived a great community spirit. Now a great recreation spot resembling a tranquil oasis – the Parimal garden is the greenest example of Torrent’s exemplary commitment to environment care and community welfare
