CSR activities:
Thirumalai Charity Trust (TCT),a secular,non-profit voluntary body was created in 1970 to promote education, health and alleviate human suffering.It is managed by people with a high level of integrity and social commitment.TCT has been continuing its tradition of service in education and has been instrumental in setting up the N R Swamy college of Commerce in1982, The Thirumalai College of Science in 1991 in Mumbai and Vedavalli Vidyalaya in Walajapet in 1994. Over 8,000 children study in these centres of education. Keeping in line with the changing needs of the society and to reach out to the people in rural areas, TCT’s commitment and activities have grown over the years ….touching every aspect of rural life – health, education, economic and social….. BRINGING THE RURAL POOR TOGETHER, IN BUILDING

Philosophy
TCT believes that all sectors of rural life are inter related and hence an integrated approach to rural development is required. TCT has great faith in rural women’s abilities and believes that women’s participation and involvement is absolutely essential for any meaningful development to take place. It is essential to work closely with several like minded organizations and Government Departments to benefit more people, more effectively and in more ways. Voluntary action is required at every level to ensure long term benefits to the community.
TCT’s Vision:
In a period of ten years, all activities will be manged by women’s organizations. There will be a demanding society which will ensure all the required services for the rural communities. Women will be economically, socially and politically empowered. There will be a greater demand for gender justice, equality and recognition of children’s rights. TCT’s project will be an acknowledged international model for women’s development.
TCT’s Mission
TCT will improve the quality of life of rural households through organisation of village based women’s groups. It aims to promote development through an increased understanding of the prevailing situation and to provide the means of improving it. Through a process of training in self management , it encourages maximum utilisation of local potentials.
Area of operation
TCT’s current area of focus is 800 villages in 150 Panchayats in Walaja and Arcot Taluks of Vellore District in Tamil Nadu , South India. Most of the villages are located on the banks of the rivers of Palar and Ponnai and are accessible from the National Highway -Chennai – Mumbai through village roads. The villages are located within a radius of 30 km from Ranipet,a big industrial town in Tamil Nadu.
Activities:
TCTs womens development programme is implemented through village based Savings and Credit Groups. Twelve to twenty poor rural women in a village are organised into a Group / Sangham. From the beginning they are trained to manage the Group within a framework of rules and regulations. They meet on a fixed day and time in the week, collect savings and loan repayments, approve loans for members and disburse them. After they learn to manage the money and ensure loan repayments, external loans from TCT or Banks is organised for them. The loan may be taken for any purpose, but over a period of time, more productive loans are encouraged. The Sangham operating in the village becomes a nodal delivery point for most of TCTs activities.
TCT has been operating this programme since December 1994, and it has been growing steadily in size and outreach, making this the main focus of TCTS activities.
Services for disability persons
Since 1996, TCT has been networking with Government and other voluntary agencies in the district in organising programmes for disabled persons and streamlining assistance to them. From organising awareness programmes, special health camps and government assistance camps for disabled persons, TCT has progressed towards setting up rehabilitation services and organising them into Self-help Groups. The Comprehensive Rehabilitation and Counselling Centre provides Physiotherapy, surgery assistance and distributes assistive devices to persons with disabilities.Self-Help Groups for persons with disability are promoted. Leaders of these groups are given leadership training.
Care for disability
The disabled people are formed into self-help groups for discussing their problems amongst themselves and accessing help from the Government and other agencies including TCT.
De addiction :
Since 1991 TCT and TTK Hospital, Chennai have together been conducting annual alcoholics rehabilitation and treatment programmes.Alcoholics are identified, educated that alcoholism is a treatable disease and motivated for treatment. Those who enroll for the camp are given wholesome care, treatment and life skills for a rehabilitated life by TTK Hospital, for fifteen days. They are then followed up on a monthly basis for a year.
Treated alcoholics are involved in educating and motivating alcoholics to give up alcohol and to avail treatment at TCT. Encouraged by the success of the programme, TCT has embarked on a three year project to create Alcohol-free Villages
Community health :
Sustainable,Affordable, Accessible, Primary Health Care is TCT’s motto. TCT has a two-tier health system. Trained Women Volunteers, Midwives and Teachers serve in the villages. They are supported by trained Health workers at the community Health Centres, each serving ten to twelve villages by extension and coordination services.TCT’s health activities are directly implemented through nine health centers in 89 villages and 44 schools Nine Health Centres provide treatment and health services, six days a week. A comprehensive Rehabilitation and Counseling Centre serves disabled persons.

Vetiniary care :
Veterinary Centres caters to the needs of villages nearby. Mobile Camps are held at regular intervals in the villages of the project area.Immunisation and de-worming of livestock and poultry are carried out periodically through special camps. Artificial insemination and pregnancy diagnosis are carried out at the Centre as well as at the camps. Common problems of animals are attended to at an affordable cost.Emergency Cases are attended to immediately on receiving a call from the project area Diagnosis and Treatment of common diseases affecting livestock and poultry is done through trained Veterinary Extension Workers

Tsumani relief work :
TCT decided to implement a drinking water project in the villages of the Nagai District, with extreme water shortage. TCT’s partners, Thirumalai Chemicals Ltd, Theosophical Order of Service (TOS) and Grundfos Pump volunteered to be part of the project.
The District administration approved the project for four villages. Three Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants were installed in the villages of Kuttinandiyur, Chandrapadi and Nambiyar Nagar. Water committees were formed and local girls were selected and trained to operate the plants.On 29.09.2005, at a well attended function at the Theosophical Society, TCT received three RO plants to be installed and maintained in the villages of Nagai. Later Nagore Pattinacherry was chosen as an additional site
