CSR activities: its continuous efforts to positively impact the community it operates within Reliance Energy Ltd. has formulated policies for social development that based on the following guiding principles:
Adopt an approach that aims at achieving a greater balance between social development and economic development.
Adopt new measures to accelerate and ensure the satisfaction of the basic needs of all people.
Work towards elimination of all barriers to the social inclusion of disadvantaged groups- such as the poor or the disabled.
Give unfailing attention to children for in their hands lies the future of the country. It is for their sake that health, education and environment are given priority in our programme and investments.
Reliance Energy Ltd. has partnered with various social and environmental organizations to address the issue of sustainable development and social upliftment. The major partners in this area are International Institute for Sustainable Future (IISF), Lion’s Club, Rotary Club, Maharashtra Energy Development Association (MEDA) and various local NGOs.
The Company in discharge of its responsibility as a corporate citizen actively contributes to community welfare measures and takes up several social initiatives every year. Reliance Energy Ltd. has been closely working with institutions and social organizations and supporting their programmes for social development, adult literacy, adoption of village, tree plantation schemes etc. Some of the outstanding contributions of Reliance Energy Ltd. discharging its social role:
In the year 2002 the floodwater entered the homes of all those who lived at ground level in Dahanu and our Dahanu plant had to be shut down. Enormous damage was caused due to this disaster. The total damage in this region was about Rs. 25 crores. In spite of this Reliance Energy Ltd. went to help the citizens of Dahanu with clean drinking water and bags of grain were distributed to those who lived in the affected areas.
The Company has constructed a 6- storey, 100 bed hospital in Mumbai viz. BSES MG Hospital. The building is spread on a plot of area of 40,000 sq. ft. This fully equipped hospital will cater to the needs of the Company’s consumers. Apart from general medical services, speciality services like C T Scan, Stress Test, Intensive Care Unit, etc. will also be made available to patients. Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Vilasrao Desmukh at the Andheri Sports Complex, inaugurated the hospital on May 01, 2002.
In January 2001, immediately in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck parts of Gujarat, Reliance Energy Ltd. rushed teams of its executives, engineers and skilled workforce to the quake affected areas and speedily restored electricity supply. The efforts put in by our team were lauded by the Chairman and senior officials of Gujarat State Electricity Board. In addition, Reliance Energy Ltd. organized a 3-day drive for collection of relief materials in Mumbai, which were immediately dispatched to the affected areas.
Reliance Energy Ltd. also took up a turnkey contract on no profit basis for the construction of more than six hundred houses in Dudhai of Bhuj district, Gujarat in association with a social welfare organization. The township was completed in a record period of 100 days and dedicated to the residents of the village by the Hon’ble Prime Minister. Reliance Energy Ltd. with contributions from its employees and matching contribution from the Company constructed a community center which also was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister. From these contributions, Reliance Energy Ltd. also completed construction of a 30 room secondary school in the same township in Dudhai.
When the super cyclone devastated parts of Orissa, the Company deputed a team of engineers with support staff for restoration of electricity in the affected areas. The timely assistance rendered by our team was effective and widely commended.
The Company has constructed the Junior College of Science building at Dahanu, three primary school-cum-community halls in the neighbouring villages of Dahanu and distributed educational and teaching materials to students of several primary schools in Dahanu. The Company has also introduced a Dahanu Reliance Energy Ltd. Merit Scholarships for Engineering and Medical students of Dahanu Taluka in association with a social welfare agency of Dahanu. The Company also confers annually the Best Teacher Awards to teachers of Dahanu identified for their outstanding contribution.
As a part of the ‘Adopt a Village” Programme, the Company, in association with Forest Department of the Government of Maharashtra, has adopted Kainad village for its strategy of developing rural areas. Under the programme, Reliance Energy Ltd. assisted in constructing smokeless ‘chullas’ (stoves) and toilet blocks for tribal families and installed photovoltaic streetlights in the village. During monsoon, the Company supplied chlorine in plastic bottles for purification of drinking water to over 5,000 tribal community members at Dahanu. When several villages on the banks of Surya and Vaitarna rivers in Palghar Taluka where the Company’s Dahanu Power Station is situated were flooded, Reliance Energy Ltd. promptly responded to the calamity and assisted over 800 families with utensils and other essential items. The Company’s fire tenders played a major role in dewatering and cleaning the affected villages.
The Company constructed and handed over an Audiometry room to a school for the deaf and dumb children of Dahanu. Reliance Energy Ltd. constructed a community hall for Dahanu Municipality. When nearly 10 adults and children of Asangaon near the Company’s Power Station at Dahanu were struck by food poisoning, the Company rushed in medicines and an ambulance to the village. This timely help has saved the lives of the affected people. The Company participates in the Pulse Polio Programme by providing transportation facilities to Primary Health Centres and also to Cottage Hospital in Dahanu. Reliance Energy Ltd. organized an eye camp at Dahanu for about 500 people including children. Spectacles and medicines were provided free of cost and cataract operations were performed for the needy.

The Company in its resolve to meet its social obligations works closely with local authorities and social welfare agencies to promote community development, by undertaking various welfare programmes, some of which have been highlighted above.

The Dahanu Power station is a significant contributor to the betterment of the community at Dahanu. It promotes and supports many programs that help the community in terms of education, employment and other aspects.
As a responsible corporate citizen DTPS has undertaken various Community initiative and social activities in and around Dahanu Taluka; a predominant Tribal area. There are focused activities in the field of Education, Health and other community needs. Regular, Permanent and Service projects are carried out for supporting the mass community.
Few projects are also jointly taken up with local NGO’s like Lions Club and Rotary Club. The projects are implemented with dedicated team from REL with planned year wise programme and allocated budget.
Specific community requirements
The company has constructed an Anti Sea Erosion Bund with a length of 700 meters at Diwa Dandi. The bund has effectively stopped erosion of soil and has saved the livelihood of the villagers. The total expenditure on the construction of the bund amounted to Rs. 75 lacs.
Construction of Water Storage check dams under ground water conservation programme at Saravali / Savata / Ashagad villeage around Dahanu . With these check dams more than 12,000 nearby villagers are benefited
The Fly Ash Brick making project was instituted in 1995 and provides employment to many tribal youth.
Mobile dispensary van for local tribals for serving community in far lung areas under Vanvasi kalyan Kendra , Talasari
Educational Initiatives
In keeping with the corporate belief that education and training are primary enablers for the society, the Dahanu TPS has actively contributed towards making quality education available in the vicinity of the company’s operations.
Specific Educational initiatives undertaken by the company include:
Establishing DTPS Junior College of Science in the year 1998. and DTPS junior college of Arts in 2004.
The Building and handing over of 8 Municipality schools to the Zilla Parishad at Dahanu.
The construction of an Audiometric Room & Computer lab for Dumb and Deaf school children.
An annual program that has been in place since 1995, under school children are given Stationary & Educational material free of cost.
The Annual Best Teacher Award in association with the Rotary Club. This program has been in place since 1995 and over this period 50 teachers have been conferred the Award.
Institution of the Merit Scholarship for Eng. and Medical Students since 1998 in association with Rotary Club. Eight students have been awarded this scholarship to date.
A Scholarship for tribal students from the Industrial Training Institute, Vanagaon, was instituted in 1990, for promoting enrollment in vocational courses.
An ongoing program to distribute note books at subsidized rates. This initiative is undertaken by the company in association with the Rotary club and has been in place since 1995.
Health Initiatives
Community health is one of the prime areas of the company’s social concerns and the company is an active contributor to community health programs.
An annual Health Check Up Camp has been instituted by the company and a local NGO for the benefit of the rural community in the vicinity of the plant.
The company sponsors an annual Eye Check Up and Cataract Operation Camp, in association with the Lions Club.
Since 1996, the company has been an active participant in the Annual Pulse Polio Program.
To ensure supply of clean and fresh drinking water, the company has undertaken construction & maintenance of 70 Tube Wells in 30 villages. This has brought welcome relief to the villagers who previously had to walk long distances to get fresh drinking water.
