CSR activities:
- The Sanmar Group has long been involved in ensuring a better quality of life for the community around it and the underprivileged. For example, providing clean water supply to the township of Mettur has been one of its earliest initiatives in this direction as has been that of street lighting.
- Sanmar has played a significant role in industry-institution interaction for several years now. The group has had close ties with IIT Chennai and other leading educational research institutions.
- In addition, schools supported by the group provide high quality education for boys and girls.With Sanmar, charity has been a way of life. Major beneficiaries of the group’s munificence have been such well known healthcare institutions as the Cancer Institute of Chennai, Sankara Nethralaya, and the Madhuram Narayanan Centre for Exceptional Children, Chennai.
Sanmar and the Environment-Sanmar’s concern for the environment is reflected in the green belts it has developed over the decades around its manufacturing facilities. Several proactive ecology conservation initiatives have been launched and substantial investments have been made in pollution abatement measures. Close to Rs. 60 crore (USD 13 million) has been invested in Safety, Health and Environment measures. More recently the Group invested an additional Rs 100 crores in various environment management initiatives. Rs 26 crores was invested in a customized technology for achieving zero discharge of liquid effluents. Rs 75 crores has been invested in conversion from a mercury cell to the environment friendly membrane cell production process at Mettur’s caustic soda facilities. The Group has also taken several initiatives with a goal towards zero off take of ground water at some of its facilities. The Group’s focus is to extend beyond statutory requirements and benchmark to global standards.
