This issue looks at water and all that could be done to conserve it. Our studies indicate that the potential of harvesting rainwater from just 300 sq. km of Mumbai can yield nearly 600 million cubic meters of water, more than enough for a population of 12 million. Simply catch the raindrops where they fall rather than fetching them from kilometers away in Bhatsa and Vaitarna. It certainly makes more sense!! The potential for water recycling is even more attractive. It is amazing that nearly 80% of the purified water, which the Municipal Corporation provides, goes down the drain. The lead article in the newsletter focuses on a different but relevant issue of slums and their proliferation. Ms. Sulakshana Mahajan provides us with an excellent and brief socio-scientific evaluation. We hope you enjoy reading this issue and give us your valuable comments.
