Senior citizen to promote reading habits among youngsters
VADODARA: At a time when Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi is promoting reading habits through his campaign Vaanche Gujarat’, a city-based NGO, too, is taking small, but determined steps to promote reading habit among citizens.
Jan Jagruti Abhiyan, run by a senior citizen, is doing its bit by distributing books for free of cost in the schools in city. The idea behind distributing the books is to encourage youngsters to read and get inspired from the writings.
“We believe that promoting reading habits will help youngsters in developing themselves. So we are spreading awareness regarding advantages of reading good books by distributing books in schools and to citizens. We have been doing this activity since last several months,” said Manhar Shah, who runs the NGO.
“Our NGO prints the books and distributes them for free to educational institutes that circulate them among their students. The books that we are circulating are autobiographies of freedom fighters who fought for the freedom of our country. Their biographies have been narrated in the form of short stories to retain interest of the readers,” Shah added.
The book named Yaad Karo Qurbani’ divided in two parts has been written by well-known author Meera Bhatt. Shah said they decided to distribute books based on freedom fighters to inspire and instil a sense of responsibility among youngsters. Shah, however, said his NGO needed donations for facilitating free distribution of books. “If we get enough donations, then we will be able to distribute books in every nook and corner of the state. We will also give free books in the cities from where we get donations,” Shah told TOI.
The NGO, which dedicated the books to public in the city in February this year, is planning to organise two more similar events in Mumbai and Mehsana in coming days.
