LORDChristopher Francis Pattenhas long been a member of the higher echelons of the Conservative Party in the UK. However, it was his role as the governor of Hong Kong at a time when the island was being returned to China that brought into international spotlight. The way he oversaw the tricky return won him acclaim at home, leading to a prominent role in the Northern Ireland peace process. Since 2003 he has been the chancellor of the University of Oxford. He spoke to Urmi A Goswami on the challenges facing higher education. Excerpts:
