Brief History of the Trust
In the year 1953, late Mr. K. C. Mahindra established this Trust for promoting education among Indian Nationals. The subjects included are Engineering, Natural Sciences, Humanities and Medicine and other emerging areas related to Science and Technology including the study of Military, Naval and Aviation Sciences.
1. K. C. MAHINDRA SCHOLARSHIPS FOR POST-GRADUATE STUDIES ABROAD
Interest-free loan scholarships for Post-Graduate studies abroad have been awarded every year since 1956. Announcements offering scholarships appear each year in leading newspapers throughout India. Government and quasi-government officers with creditable academic records, going abroad for specialised qualifications are also eligible to apply for the scholarships. The amount awarded per scholarship is Rs. 75,000/- at present.
Preference is given to students who are interested in pursuing advanced studies in subjects for which facilities in India are limited, and subjects important to India’s development, such as Survey and Prospecting of the mineral resources of the country; alternate sources of energy like Solar, Wind and Tidal Energy, and Bio-gas Technology for rural areas; Oceanography; Off-shore Drilling; Harvesting of ocean wealth, like Sea-bed Mining, Fisheries and Exploration of other oceanic products; Water Management,
Agricultural Research and Engineering, Transportation, Economics, Electronics and other emerging areas related to Science and Technology including study of Military, Naval and Aviation Sciences.
ELIGIBILITY TO APPLY FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP: The candidate is required to possess a First Class Degree or equivalent Diploma of the same standard from a recognised Indian University. The candidate must have secured admission or at least have applied for admission to a reputable University or Institution abroad. Advertisements are released in January and final interviews and selections are held in July every year. A specimen copy of the advertisement is shown on page 32 and specimen copy of the prescribed application Form is included on page No. 33 8v 34. Further details with regard to rules and regulations governing the Scholarship awards can be acquired from the Trust office in Mumbai.
2. MAHINDRA SEARCH FOR TALENT SCHOLARSHIPS
To enthuse and reward excellence in academics the Trustees instituted this Scholarship Scheme in 1983. The Scheme so far has been introduced in 34 Education Institutions in India. The Trust awards the students obtaining the highest aggregate marks based on the annual year-end promotion examination. In boarding schools the scholarship amount is Rs. 10,000/-, whereas, in other schools the value of the scholarship is Rs. 5,000/- to each awardee. 3. MAHINDRA SEARCH FOR TALENT – HONOUR SCHOLARSHIPS
The Trust introduced HONOUR SCHOLARSHIP awards in 1988 applicable to all institutions where MAHINDRA SEARCH FOR TALENT SCHOLARSHIP Scheme has already been established. The student who receives Mahindra Search for Talent Scholarship more than once, is awarded this HONOUR SCHOLARSHIP – which consists of Rs. 5,000/- cash award and a citation from the Trust.
4. K. C. MAHINDRA CHAIR for Nuclear Chemistry was established in 1970 at the Institute of Science, Mumbai. The income from the Corpus is utilised by the Institute to pay for a whole-time Professor to carry out research in the field of Nuclear Chemistry. In case of any shortfall the same is made up by the Government of Maharashtra.
5. K. C. MAHINDRA SCHOLARSHIPS
instituted at “Support the Handicapped’s Rehabilitation Effort”, Mumbai is utilised to award free scholarships to six school-going children between 5 and 12 years of age, affected by leprosy or children of parents who are affected by the disease.
6. K. C. MAHINDRA SCHOLARSHIPS
instituted at Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan, Calcutta is utilised to award six free scholarships every year to young widows and girls from lower income families to undergo training in Nursing and at the end of a period of 2 years become fully qualified nurses.
7. FREE BOOK DISTRIBUTION TO POOR STUDENTS
The Trust has selected Jyotir Bikash Mitra Endowment Fund Society of Calcutta, far the distribution of books free to students from lower income families. Similar schemes for sponsoring the distribution of books free at other Centres in India are under consideration.
8. MAHINDRA GIRL CHILD PROJECT – NANHI KALI
The Trust has launched a scheme to educate and generally look after the welfare of underprivileged girls in urban and rural parts of India. The scheme is known as the `NANHI KALI’ project. Plans are to ultimately promote primary education for 10,000 girls in India. Voluntary Organisations and Individuals are approached by the Trust to participate in this scheme, sponsored by the Trust. The details of the scheme are available from the Trust office. Brief details about `NANHI KALI’ project and steps for sponsoring a girl child by any individual is given in a separate leaflet which is enclosed. Additional leaflets can be obtained from the Trust office.
9. PREM BHATIA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR JOURNALISM
at Prem Bhatia Memorial Trust, New Delhi, is every year sponsored by K. C. Mahindra Education Trust.
10. MAHINDRA ALL INDIA TALENT SCHOLARSHIPS
The Trust introduced this scheme in 1995 for students with good scholastic records from lower income group families. The students should have passed S.S.C./H.S.C. or equivalent exams, to pursue job-oriented diploma courses at recognised polytechnics. The value of the scholarship is Rs. 5,000/- per year for a maximum period of 3 years. The Trust has so far awarded 570 such scholarships to aspiring students from all over India. From 1997 the Trust plans to award total number of 500 scholarships every year under this scheme. Brief particulars of this scheme along with a specimen of the prescribed application form is given on pages 8 to 31. The specimen copy of the prescribed application form which can also be used by applicants is included on page 29 &, 30. A specimen copy of the terms and conditions to which an awardee has to comply with is given on page 31.
11. DHANDEVI MAHINDRA SCHOLARSHIP
AWARD The Trust grants scholarships to the selected Faculty Members of Sophia College, Mumbai, for undergoing advanced training to improve their teaching capabilities.
12. KEMA GRANTS FOR FACULTY MEMBERS AND STAFF OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS. Established in 1997, under this scheme, financial assistance, scholarships and grants will be awarded to faculty members and staff of education institutions.
