Background & Data Sheet –Consumers Welfare Association
a) Consumers Welfare Association was promoted by a group of academically qualified persons 50% of whom are women (including 3 practicing advocates) dedicated to serve the consumers as per the Objects of the Association. The Secretary and Jt. Secretary of the Association have been actively involved in the consumer movement since 1986 when they were office bearers of Consumer Guidance Society of India. The Jt. Secretary is the recipient of the Govt. of India’s National Youth Award for Consumer Protections (First Prize) for 1993. The Association was registered under the Societies Act 1860 and bears regn.no.643 of 2003 (Greater Mumbai Region). U/s 12 of the Consumer Protection Act 1986, the Association is entitled to file a complaint under the Act for any consumer whether he/she is a member or not.
b) Membership: Life members 12. Ordinary members 18 as on 31.08.2006.
c) Activities: (i) Free legal advice to consumers defined u/s2(1)(d) of the Act.
(ii) Filing complaints and representing consumers before the
Consumer Fora in Mumbai for obtaining relief and compensation
