Aug 2006 : Seva Sadan Society – Underprivileged Girls & Women (Have FCRA)
August 2006 – Nonprofit-of-the-Month – Seva Sadan Society
The “Seva Sadan Society, conceived and founded in 1908, is an institution dedicated “ to protect, educate, & empower underprivileged girls and women“
It is a Public Charitable Trust registered under Act XI of 1860, the Bombay Public Trust Act 1950, and under Section 6(1) of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act 1976. The Society is also exempted under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act 1961.
A project initiated by two visionary philanthropists Shri Behramji Malabari and Divan Dayaram Gidumal to emancipate destitute Indian widows, Seva Sadan has evolved over the years to keep pace with the changing times. The old ideology of charity has been replaced by empowerment and self reliance. In this pursuit, today, the Society provides young girls with education and
training geared to ensure their overall development.
In Mumbai, one of the unique and innovative ventures undertaken by Seva Sadan, is their restaurant, ” By The Way“, situated next to Gamdevi Police Station. This pleasant and well-appointed restaurant, offers Indian & Continental Cuisine, made from generations-old recipes, all served with warmth and a smile, underlying their belief of ” cuisine with a cause“.
Besides this, the Society also runs a Teachers’ Training College, a Pre-primary, Primary and Secondary School, a girls’ orphanage, and offers a variety of vocational courses to enable and equip the girls to support themselves as earning members of society, rather than just providing them with care and shelter.
As a part of its concept of empowerment of women being done through food, the society has implemented a number of activities and novel projects, such as a catering service called “Aahar” as well as a tiffin meal service for office goers and Corporates, both of which are very popular.
The Society completes a 100 years in 2008 , and aims to continue fulfilling the aims of its founders who were dedicated to the empowerment of women, for the next several years to come.
